Job Summary

The University of Utah’s Alumni Association is looking for an associate editor / communications specialist with excellent writing and editing skills, social media expertise, mentoring abilities and U school spirit. This position is a non-exempt, full time, benefited position.


•Write, edit, and produce the Alumni Association’s monthly online newsletter, web content, and other PR materials

•Provide support to the editor of Continuum, the quarterly magazine of the University of Utah, which may include a variety of editorial tasks from generating story ideas to writing news articles to proofing copy

•Manage the Alumni Association’s day-to-day social media efforts, supervise one-to-three student interns for social media, and help develop and lead the overall integrated social media campaigns and strategy for the Alumni Association

•Work with Director of Marketing to set specific metrics and goals to achieve with email open rates; number of web visitors; social media followers, likes and shares; etc.

•Writing and content creation for:UUAAmarketing materials; theUUAAwebsite; membership, license plate, and event promotion; press releases and items for @theU; as needed

•Occasionally oversee and manage production of video content for theUUAAwebsite and for social media

Minimum Qualifications

Four years editorial experience or equivalency required. Demonstrated organizational skills are required for balancing multiple projects. Excellent human relations skills are crucial for interacting with various individuals with differing knowledge bases. A related degree may be preferred.

Highly Preferred

•Ability to write compelling news and feature articles, and press releases

•Capable of writing captivating headlines and effective social media posts


•Professional social media experience (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, etc.), including knowledge of how to measure the effectiveness of social media campaigns

•Editing and proofing skills and knowledge of AP and Chicago styles

•Ability to think fast and creatively while juggling various deadlines

•Knowledge of the Adobe Design Suite and Premiere, Asana,HTML, and web content management software such as Hootsuite preferred

•Degree (or pursuing a degree) in communications, PR, journalism, English, or related field.
