Job Summary

The Director, Section of Surgical Innovation will provide strategic direction for development of a best practice innovation program for academic faculty, trainees, and staff within the Department of Surgery ( DOS ). The Manager will be responsible for developing collaborations, managing, overseeing and/or coordinating University stakeholders for all aspects of technology transfer, intellectual property management, licensing, new venture creation and equity management, economic development, corporate engagement (including sponsored research, workforce development, philanthropy, and joint ventures), business incubators and accelerators, venture funds, ecosystem development and related activities.

The Director, Section of Surgical Innovation will report to the Senior Director of Research Development with additional reporting to the Section Chief of Surgical Innovation. This position has no responsibility for providing care to patients.

Essential Functions

1. Manage day to day operations for the section of surgical innovation.

2. Identify and liaise with other key stakeholders within the University of Utah innovation infrastructure ( VPR , CMI , TLO , Therapeutics Accelerator, etc.).

3. Develop processes to streamline innovation for faculty and staff within the DOS .

4. Develop resources to educate faculty staff and learners within the DOS on innovation pathways at the University of Utah.

5. Facilitate interdepartmental collaborations across the University of Utah.

6. Work with innovators to develop their ideas through the university infrastructure.

7. Potentially facilitate market sizing analysis, company startup.

8. Work with pre-award team to support submissions for external funding.

Problem Solving

Incumbents in this position have the authority to manage assigned units and designated programs and services. They are responsible for ensuring that diverse patient/customer, family and community issues affecting customer/patient service and care are resolved. Directs the planning and administration of the unit’s budget and makes spending decisions within budget guidelines. Oversees program development for assigned units and ensures that policies and procedures are followed.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration or related area, or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience); eight years of progressively more responsible management experience; and demonstrated leadership, human relations and effective communications skills required.

Master’s degree in Business Administration, or related area preferred.
