Job Summary

The Therapeutic Accelerator was launched to identify and accelerate the most promising therapeutic assets at University of Utah and Huntsman Cancer Institute. With a significant initial investment, the Accelerator will be structured and resourced to rapidly identify and advance up to four assets annually. Working in close coordination with academic researchers, CRO’s and industry partners, the Accelerator will create a pipeline of therapeutic candidates and subsequently commercialize them.

The Therapeutic Accelerator Team is charged with rapid acceleration of novel therapeutic and drug delivery systems scaled to standard business practices. The capability is new to the University, so the team will also initially be charged with establishing clarity and trust across campus.

The Managing Director of the Therapeutic Accelerator will report directly to the Executive Board of the Accelerator. It is anticipated the Managing Director will build a team of approximately 4-6 highly skilled individuals with industry and scientific experience. The team will take on high profile projects and help lead them through preclinical development in preparation for a commercialization partnership, transaction or start-up.


•Oversight of the Therapeutic Accelerator’s budget

•Attend all introductory calls from University and Huntsman researchers

•Classify discoveries and ideas into Accelerator workflow processes.

•Review each researcher’s presentation looking for opportunities to help progress discoveries

•Research and stay current with project related literature.

•Prepare and present Accelerator updates to Advisory Board and other stakeholders

•Collaborate closely with PIVOT Center to identify technologies that are ready for disclosure or licensing.

•Seek out and build relationships with outside companies that would fill gaps in research development

•Conduct 6 month check-in calls with researchers

•Facilitate the validation and replication of discoveries presented to the Accelerator.

•Create relationships with and collaboration opportunities to work with University of Utah and Huntsman Cores.

•Become familiar with the labs on campus to take advantage of work that can be done on campus.

Minimum Qualifications

•10+ years of industry experience bringing therapeutics from pre-clinical development through clinical trials.

•BA/BS Degree required (PhD, MBA or advanced degree in a related field preferred)

•Venture capital, large industry or consulting experience preferred

•Successful ability to navigate a matrix-ed environment

•Experience with/comfort presenting to senior leaders

•Experience driving and being accountable for projects and revenue goals with enterprise-wide impact (experience at a large, multinational company preferred)

•Demonstrated ability to lead small and large teams of direct and indirect reports

•Strong influencing skills when working with internal and external partners at all levels of the organization
