This DevOps Engineer III for Information Technology Services will provide a primary role in the operational support of the virtualization environments at the University of Utah.

This position will assist project teams with technical issues in the initiation and planning phases of projects. These activities include the definition of needs, benefits, technical strategy, research & development, technical analysis & design, testing, and rolling-out the solutions.

This position supports the infrastructure for many of the University of Utah’s most critical IT resources including patient care, student services, email, voice systems, online collaboration services, information security, teaching and learning technologies, software licensing, the campus network, and a host of other systems and applications. This position is not responsible for providing care to patients.

(this position will be a hybrid work schedule ongoing; meaning some days in-office, some days remote)

Responsibilities

Essential Functions

  • Design, provision, configure, and document server systems

  • Maintain virtual server environment including template creation, deployment, virtual server maintenance, virtual networking creation, resolving performance degradation, and resource management

  • Assist in monitoring, maintaining, and troubleshooting server systems including routine maintenance, application software updates, etc.

  • Participate in IT procurement process and manage inventory of server equipment components, and application software; including installing upgrades, patches, new application software, equipment, and decommissioning of obsolete equipment and application software

  • Review, create and maintain support documentation including documenting operational processes

  • Troubleshoot, resolve, and escalate issues when necessary

  • Work with minimal supervision

  • Undertake other special projects as assigned by management to improve administration of the technology infrastructure.

Knowledge / Skills / Abilities

  • Experience with at least three (3) of the following platforms

  • VMware (vSphere, vRealize Suite)

  • Windows Server

  • Active Directory (Operational)

  • PowerShell, Python

  • Linux (RHEL, Ubuntu)

  • System Configuration Management (Ansible, Microsoft MECM/SCCM, Puppet, SaltStack, etc.)

  • Storage (SAN/NAS)

  • Backup

  • Cloud Administration (Azure, GCP, AWS)

  • Good understanding of modern software deployment methodology, including two or more of: continuous integration, continuous delivery, test-driven development, Agile/Scrum.

  • Good understanding of one or more modern version control systems such as Git or BitBucket.

  • Experience with system administration or software development on a team.

Qualifications

Qualifications Required

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or Engineering or equivalent.

  • Three years experience administering systems or equivalent.
