This position collaborates, mentors, defines, tests, and performs database engineering level work in our mission critical enterprise scale Oracle RAC, SQL Server AOAG, and Epic Cache HA/DR environments. This position engineers and designs database software release and system upgrade processes, evaluates and installs upgrades and patches, and helps identify and troubleshoot performance related problems both independently and in collaboration with other senior Database Team members. Performs and develops database backups and recovery tasks. Establishes, develops, maintains and monitors database system configurations and alerts to ensure data integrity, continuity, and availability. Serves as a mentor to junior level Database Team members. This position has no responsibility for providing care to patients.

  • Becomes familiar, competent, and authoritative with multiple Database System platforms and implementations through independent study, hands on work, training, and collaboration with senior Team members.

  • Analyzes system logs and identifies potential issues with database systems.

  • Researches, develops, documents and performs tasks needed to integrate new technologies into existing database environments.

  • Defines and completes audits and reviews of database systems including hardware, software, and network infrastructure.

  • Completes, and designs new processes for, database backups, restores, and data migrations as needed.

  • Reviews, documents, and performs database recovery plans and procedures to ensure maximum availability of systems.

  • Installs, configures, and documents database software according to best practices as required.

  • Adds, removes, or updates database user account information, resetting passwords, etc.

  • Proactively investigates technical queries, provides solutions or root cause, and resolves system and user issues.

  • Understands and adheres to security policies and procedures.

  • Defines, documents, and implements standard configurations to current and future systems and processes in collaboration with senior Database Team members.

  • Triages and remediates reported problems, determines root cause, and designs preventative configurations and processes.

  • Performs qualitative and quantitative performance tuning and testing and shares knowledge with team.

  • Develops protocols and procedures to validate that the database infrastructure is up and running appropriately.

  • Installs and migrates database object changes through development, test, and production.

  • Fully and proactively participates in On-Call rotation established for team.

  • Works independently, and leads collaboratively, on complex projects with minimal direction and supervision.

  • Explores, tests, and remains knowledgeable of current and future industry database options, trends, and directions.

  • Design and develop repeatable, manual or automated Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) and teach others through Knowledge Transfer (KT) presentations.

Knowledge / Skills / Abilities

  • Detail oriented, process focused, ability to learn independently in a fast paced environment and communicate effectively.

  • Design, develop, document, test, and perform the implementation and integration of new database architectures into future and existing team supported environments.

  • Knowledge of, experience with, and adherence to change control processes in a large production environment.

  • Knowledge of, experience with, and ability to deploy highly available database technologies such as replication, load balancing, mirroring, and clustering.

  • Experience with, and ability to, authoritatively install and configure database server software and document and compare new and existing systems.

  • Identify, design, develop, and defend standard monitoring requirements and apply additional setting requirements authoritatively and collaboratively with Team.

  • Ability to triage, troubleshoot and remediate complex and difficult issues in the database management system.

  • Proactively and independently lead and participate in the architecture and design configuration plans and discussions from vendors or system architects.

  • Proactively and authoritatively participate in the documentation, creation, and implementation of standards and guidelines.

  • Ability to write complex queries, programming, scripting, and coding to automate, support, and retrieve data from the database management system.


Qualifications Required

  • Bachelors Degree in Computer Science or Information Technology or equivalency.

  • Three years of applicable database experience.

Qualifications (Preferred)


  • Oracle OCP, Microsoft MCSE, Epic ODBA, or other Technical Certification in related area or equivalency.

  • Experience working with any modern DBMS (Oracle, SQL Server, Cache', DB2, Teradata, and/or other).

  • Oracle RAC, SQL Server AOAG, Cache Mirroring, or other HA/ DR/ Mirroring / Clustering database technologies.

  • Familiarity with Cloud platforms (Microsoft Azure, VMware vCloud, Amazon Web Services, etc.

  • Demonstrated experience with at least ONE of the following DBMS: Oracle, SQL Server, Epic (Inersystems) Cache.
