Job Summary

The Division of Epidemiology at the University of Utah seeks a highly-motivated and analytical minded data scientist to solve complex healthcare related problems by applying artificial intelligence in medicine on collaborative research endeavors. Our data scientist team will develop innovative solutions to find new innovative discoveries among vast amounts of big data and develop applied predictive analytic methods and visualization techniques to solve complex problems. The data scientist will work in a collaborative environment with research teams across the country address specific research aims. In addition, the data scientist has exceptional communication and written skills with the ability to present complex results in an understandable way. Responsibilities

-Work with research investigators to develop hypotheses to address complex healthcare challenges by applying data science, machine learning, and artificial intelligence.

-Develop scientific methods related to data science problems.

-Apply and develop advanced analytic methods to address complex healthcare hypotheses.

-Develop applied natural language processing and machine learning code to carry out data science projects.

-Wrangle data and develop analytic style queries to develop reference sets to support data science solutions.

-Contribute in writing manuscripts for publication of conducted work with research teams.

-Educate, mentor, and collaborate with junior data scientists to help develop their skills.

Performs complicated and difficult assignments under general direction requiring a high degree of technical competence reflecting knowledge of current state-of-the-art technologies and approaches to data science. Conceives and plans projects involving the assessment of basic architecture, current hardware limitations, defines and selects new concepts and approaches. A wide degree of creativity is expected. May report directly to a project lead or manager.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree and 6-8 years of related experience in the field or related area is required.

This position has no responsibility for providing care to patients.

Applicants must demonstrate the potential ability to perform the essential functions of the job as outlined in the position description.

Preferences

-Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, or Physics.

-4-6 years’ experience in advanced analytics, applied statistics, machine learning, and statistical natural language processing to address complex data science problems.

-In-depth knowledge and experience using the Python programming language.

-In-depth knowledge and experience using Matlab and R.

-In-depth knowledge and experience developing analytics queries usingSQL.

-In-depth knowledge and experience applying state-of-the-art data mining techniques.

-Ability to effectively prioritize and execute tasks in a fast-paced environment.

-Experience processing, cleansing, and verifying the integrity of healthcare data used for analysis in the clinical domain.

-Experience with data visualization techniques for viewing high dimensional data.

-Excellent analytical and critical thinking skills.

-Exceptional database query and analytics skills.

-Ability to work with remote teams from across the globe.

-Strong organizational and interpersonal skills with demonstrated ability to work in a collaborative team-based environment.

-Exceptional written and verbal communications skills

Optional Skills

-Experience in optimization of computationally intensive machine learning algorithms.

-Experience in the healthcare domain.
