GENERAL INTERNAL MEDICINE / MEDICAL ETHICS AND HUMANITIES FACULTY POSITION AT THE UNIVERSITY OF UTAH
The University of Utah Division of General Internal Medicine/Medical Ethics and Humanities is currently recruiting a Clinician Educator/Clinical Ethicist at the main campus location.
The University of Utah is seeking a physician with training in Internal Medicine as a Clinical Educator and Clinical Ethicist to lead clinical ethics activities for the Department of Internal Medicine, the University of Utah and University Hospital. This new position will be supported at 50% FTE from the Department of Internal Medicine, Division of General Internal Medicine/Medical Ethics and Humanities Program and 50% through clinical activities. The individual will have an MD or DO degree, be board certified in Internal Medicine, and have formal training in bioethics. Preferably, the individual will have 5 or more years of experience as a clinician in a tertiary care center and extensive experience with clinical ethics consultations and ethics committee work.
•Clinical Educator: Four half days of ambulatory practice with opportunities to teach third and fourth- year medical students and internal medicine residents
•Ethics consultation: Consultations will be conducted in collaboration with the University Hospital Ethics Committee. The clinical ethicist will conduct many of the consultations and support the development, education, and training of other faculty and staff to conduct ethics consultations.
•Clinical ethics teaching: The clinical ethicist will develop, conduct, and promote teaching for clinical faculty and staff at University Hospital on a variety of ethical, legal, and policy issues.
•Policy Development and Review. An important function for ethics committees is to develop policies that have significant ethical content (e.g., DNAR policies, advance directives, transplant issues, etc.). The clinical ethicist will assist the Ethics Committee, Hospital and School of Medicine administrations in developing and/or reviewing relevant policies.
•Research. Depending on the extent of the recruit’s clinical responsibilities and career goals, an active research portfolio could be supported.
The Program of Medical Ethics and Humanities ( PMEH ) was founded 30 years ago in the Department of Internal Medicine. The Program currently consists of 12 faculty members from across the University campus who have primary appointments in the Departments of Philosophy, Pediatrics, Internal Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, Psychiatry, and the College of Law. The PMEH is heavily involved in the education and research missions of the University of Utah, including courses and programs for residents, medical students, graduate students, faculty and staff across the campus. Our faculty have national and international reputations for expertise in domains that are critical to the educational, research, and clinical missions of the University of Utah including research ethics, end-of-life care, health law, health system privacy, the medical humanities, pediatric ethics, and the ethical and legal issues in genetic technologies.
