Job Summary

Huntsman Cancer Institute (HCI) at the University of Utah, the official cancer center of Utah, invites nominations and applications for the position of Chief Strategy Officer (CSO). Reporting to theCEO, theCSOwill drive strategic planning and implementation, business development, partnerships, and joint ventures forHCI. At a pivotal moment in the growth of this young, dynamic organization, theCSOwill play an important role in expanding HCI’s impact, enhancing its reputation, and establishing it as a world-class cancer research and care organization.

Founded by Jon M. and Karen Huntsman,HCIbelongs to a select group of National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers, and includes a state-of-the-art cancer specialty hospital as well as two buildings dedicated to cancer research. Its mission is to understand cancer from its beginnings, to use that knowledge in the creation and improvement of cancer treatments, to relieve the suffering of cancer patients, and to provide education about cancer risk, prevention, and care.

At this exciting moment of growth and transformation and in a newly created position, theCSOwill play a crucial role in realizing HCI’s vision, increasing its reach, and maximizing its impact. TheCSOwill oversee strategic planning, facilitate evaluation of partnership opportunities, and work collaboratively with the leadership team to evaluate and prioritize strategic opportunities while ensuring alignment with HCI’s mission, vision, and values. The position will focus on strategy development, expansion of analytic and performance tracking capabilities, evaluation of internal and external partnerships, market opportunities, sustainability, and reputational drivers. TheCSOwill be part of a leadership community atHCIthat is dedicated to embodying and promoting the Institute’s core values, culture, and mission and will embrace HCI’s core principles: “the patient first, united effort, and excellence in all we do.”

Responsibilities

The Chief Strategy Officer will be a collaborative leader, a perceptive analyst, and a team player who will develop a comprehensive grasp of the Institute’s culture, resources, market, and constraints and will work energetically with colleagues to define and secure alignment around a compelling vision for its research, clinical, and education activities and for its path forward as a world-class cancer research and care organization. S/he will bring toHCIa track record of success as a member of a leadership team that has guided a clinical and/or research enterprise to new levels of excellence. TheCSOwill embrace theHCIculture while contributing to its ongoing evolution.

Minimum Qualifications

Qualified candidates will have visionary and strategic thinking skills, sound judgement, experience being effective within matrixed environments, excellent communication and listening skills, and the ability to see patterns and opportunities in complex environments. They will bring a collaborative style, rapid learning skills, and strong business acumen in areas such as revenue projections, cost and profit drivers, and M&A.

Preferences

The successful candidate will be an experienced professional with advanced academic training in strategy or related field (MBA, MS, MD, PhD, JD) and over 10 years of experience in strategy consulting or leadership preferably in a cancer research/patient-care setting or at least in an academic medical center or health system. Experience in the business side of healthcare (e.g. in consulting) is also relevant.
