Job Summary

The University of Utah is seeking to recruit an outstanding leader to oversee an investment portfolio totaling approximately $1.4 billion. Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer, the Chief Investment Officer/Associate Vice President for Investments will provide investment leadership and management. The CIO’s broad mandate includes portfolio construction, driving adherence to investment policy guidelines, asset allocation, risk management, and striving to exceed performance benchmarks while assuming appropriate levels of risk.

The Chief Investment Officer/Associate Vice President for Investments is an essential member of the University’s financial team responsible for devising the University’s investment strategy. Working in collaboration with the University’s senior leaders in Finance and the University’s external investment advisors, the Chief Investment Officer/Associate Vice President for Investments will build on past successes and articulate a vision and roadmap for investment strategy.

Responsibilities

· Responsible for the overall management of the University of Utah’s endowment pool Investment portfolio

· Implements investment objectives and policies established by the University and the Investment Advisory Committee of the Board of Trustees

· Guides all aspects of the University of Utah’s endowment pool investment objectives, policies, and processes

· Sourcing, evaluating, and executing all investment strategies, including oversight of all endowment pool investment activities in consultation with the University’s external investment advisors

· Conducting thorough due diligence on the most compelling prospective opportunities including analysis of investment strategy, process, organization, portfolio positions, and performance

· Continually exploring, identifying, evaluating, and recommending new investment opportunities

· Monitoring performance, portfolio positions, current events, and organizational changes of the investment fund managers and completing analytical reviews to evaluate the relative performance of each fund manager on a regular basis

· Staying abreast of market conditions and developments that may affect The University of Utah’s investment holdings and strategies and acting proactively and appropriately to protect those interests

· Negotiates management fees and endowment pool investment guidelines with fund managers

· Provides ongoing assessment to the Chief Financial Officer

· Supports the Chair of the University’s Investment Committee by developing the agenda and meeting materials for the Committee’s meetings

· Oversees a team of professionals

· Works closely and collaboratively with other University offices to ensure timely investment of funds and timely access to funds

· Ensures critical information to support tax compliance and accounting/financial reporting is obtained

· Works with the University’s Internal Audit Office and Office of the Controller for the annual investment audit and report that supports the University’s audited financial statements

Minimum Qualifications

· Minimum of eight years of progressively responsible experience relevant to the responsibilities of the position

· Demonstrated record of investment and relevant work experience which includes third-party investment manager evaluation and direct managerial experience

· MBA or CFA is preferred

· Success in attracting, developing, and mentoring a team of high-performing professionals

· Knowledge of financial operations and investments

· Understanding of and experience in ESG /sustainable investments

· Understanding of risk management with the ability to address the various areas of risk

· Experience in working in a collaborative manner with a Board or Investment Committee

· A proven investment track record and commitment to achieving excellence in investment performance, plus a reputation for sound investment judgment and risk management

· Highly collaborative and team-oriented with strong interpersonal skills

· Strong communication skills with the ability to build relationships with a variety of stakeholders (President, Trustees, Investment Advisory Committee, other University leadership, Health System, Development, etc.)

· Highest standards of personal and professional ethics and integrity including discretion regarding confidential and sensitive information

· Experience with non-profits, colleges or universities, foundations, or the public sector is preferred

· Commitment to developing a culture of ethical behavior, integrity, and the avoidance of both the appearance and actual conflicts of interest
