Job Summary

The Certified Cancer Registrar – Quality Improvement Specialist ( QIS ) is responsible for assisting registry, research, and medical staff in ensuring quality registry data and compliance with State and Federal Regulations and accreditation requirements through quality improvement (QI) program design and data collection, analysis and presentation. This position may also code, stage, abstract all cases of cancer and certain benign tumors initially seen, diagnosed, and/or treated in Utah within the guidelines of the Utah Department of Health, Utah Cancer Registry, and other applicable regulatory body requirements for statistical analysis of cancer incidence, mortality, and treatment protocols in local, state, national and world databases.

Responsibilities

1.Abstracts and reviews cases of malignancies and certain benign tumors diagnosed and/or treated at specified reporting facilities and clinics for addition to the tumor registry database per local, state, federal, and other required regulatory body guidelines.

2.Performs casefinding, coding, staging and quality control on reportable cancer cases utilizing ICD -O-3, ICD -10-CM, SEER Extent of Disease Staging, SEER Summary Staging, treatment coding guidelines, and all SEER , NPCR or other reporting guidelines.

3.Reviews and interprets patient information as it relates to registry data requirements and use to assess quality data in order to make necessary improvements, corrections, and feedback.

4.Designs QI studies, develops criteria for evaluation, and assists with appropriate data collection and data analysis.

5.Contacts providers and other state cancer registries per the database to gather detailed information and/or verify or correct patient information.

6.Identifies, researches, plans, develops, implements with department/individual collaboration on regulatory standards, and provides appropriate timely response to inquiries, questions and/or concerns.

7.Reviews and interprets patient information as it relates to registry data requirements and used to assess quality data and necessary improvements, corrections, and feedback.

8.Provides education to registrars on results of audits. Provides information to reporting agencies on reporting requirements including State and National Standards. Provide education on data analysis and utilization of information to registry, staff, research and regulatory entities.

9.Attends and may facilitate department QI meetings, providing “expert” input regarding problem identification and resolution, continuous quality improvement ( CQI ), and other activities (specified by the State Health Department and National Cancer Institute).

10.Assists with tracking and trending Quality Indicators, writing and executing validation plans and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), deviation management, root cause analysis, carrying out other Quality Assurance duties as dictated by management.

11.Assists in retrieving and compiling data for reporting, preparation of annual reporting, or other projects.

12.Contacts patients, providers, and/or other state registries per the database to gather patient specific information and verify or correct patient information.

13.Assists in the development, review, and training of Cancer Registry policies & procedures.

14.Assist in the recruitment and hiring of personnel.

15.May facilitate educational meetings, internal and external.

16.Attends department meetings, conferences or trainings as assigned.

17.Ability to organize and lead teams. Prioritizes and coordinates work processes. Ability to assist in conflict management of team. Provides support to supervisor and management.

Minimum Qualifications

Five years of experience as a Certified Tumor Registrar, including abstracting of Cancer Cases. National Tumor Registry Certification required. Additional license requirements as determined by the hiring department.

Experience with Cancer Registry Quality Improvement, Reporting, and Educational activities preferred.
