Work Schedule Summary

Career Development Interns typically work a standard weekly schedule of 10-15hours/week, Monday-Friday, between 8am and 5pm. Schedules are determined based on each intern’s academic schedule and the needs of the CDI team.

Please note that Career Development Interns:

  • Must provide a minimum of 20 hours of availability per week at the start of each term for scheduling purposes.
  • May choose to work none or a reduced number of hours during finals, school breaks, or any days when classes are not officially in session

Job Summary

As a Career Development Intern, you will support our CPDC mission by providing relatable and accessible career guidance to U of U students and recent alumni through peer-to-peer advising, making an intentional effort to meet students where they are at in their academic and career journeys. As you progress in your internship, our supportive CPDC team will be here for you, working closely with you to guide and train you, facilitate your development as a Career Development Intern, and support your success in your own career journey. This internship is designed for students who are interested in supporting the career development of fellow students and recent graduates. In the CPDC , our mission is to empower students and recent graduates to continually explore and pursue rewarding careers through accessible career education, events, resources, and network connections.


Overall Learning Outcomes

  • Provide one-on-one guidance to University of Utah peers on various career topics, through CPDC virtual live chat, Career Studio, and email account, to support students’ career development
  • Be an active and engaged member of the Career Development Intern team, working collaboratively with fellow CDIs
  • Work with CPDC staff, and especially Career Coaches and Outreach & Engagement staff, to facilitate career education and student engagement initiatives
  • Contribute your specialized knowledge, skills, and experience to support a specific CPDC project area each semester, as part of your overall internship responsibilities

Detailed Learning Outcomes

  • Serve as first point of contact for the CPDC by managing the front desk in-person, including taking phone calls, greeting guests, and answering questions/concerns about the CPDC
  • Provide one-on-one guidance to undergraduate and graduate students through the CPDC email account and website’s virtual Live Chat and in the Career Studio on foundational career-related topics, including resumes and cover letters, career exploration, job/internship search resources, and interview preparation
  • Complete a semester-length project virtually and in-person, in partnership with a designated CPDC staff member who will be your project supervisor, to contribute your skills, knowledge, and experience to a CPDC initiative. Projects could include a focus on marketing, outreach and employer relations, career coaching, assessment/data analysis, social media, blogging, and video production, to name a few.
  • Co-present career-related workshops periodically with CPDC staff for various campus partners, classes, and student groups
  • Participate in weekly team meetings and mandatory virtual training sessions throughout the semester, which may involve the opportunity to develop and present your own trainings
  • Review and provide feedback on resumes and cover letters from both undergraduate and graduate students virtually and in-person
  • Assist in reviewing and posting jobs and internships in Handshake (the University of Utah’s student job/internship platform)
  • Represent CPDC at tabling events throughout the semester
  • Support efforts to market CPDC services, events, and resources to students
  • Plan and execute the Dress for Success Scholarship Program, led annually by the Career Development Intern Team, by serving on different committees both virtually and in-person

Minimum Qualifications

  • Maintain good standing and full-time status at the University of Utah
  • Demonstrate a minimum availability of at least 10 hours/week (no more than 15 hours/week)
  • Commit to two semesters (one academic year) of employment
  • Must possess an ability to work well with people from all backgrounds and identities


  • Preference will be given to applicants who may receive a Federal Work Study Award
  • Experience engaging with the CPDC and utilizing CPDC services ( NOT required)
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to diversity, inclusion, and social justice
  • Experience public speaking and willingness to present to small and large student groups
  • Excellent time management, organizational, project coordination, and follow-through skills
  • Demonstrated experience with mentoring, coaching, teaching, advising, and/or leadership
  • Demonstrated campus involvement through participation in student groups and/or departments
  • Ability to respond to workplace communication quickly and regularly
  • Ability to take initiative and seek out projects and assignments
  • Demonstrated experience managing and completing a multi-step project or event in work or school
