Job Summary

Come join the Campus Planning team at the University of Utah! We are a growing team of professional Planners, Architects and Landscape Architects tasked with the implementation of the University Master Plan and its associated documents. We work with student, academic and professional groups on and off campus to ensure the values, goals and mission of the University are achieved. Now more than ever, the University is growing in unprecedented ways. We are looking for an energetic individual to help us shape and innovate our changing campus.

The ideal candidate for this position will have a strong design background and the ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and visually. This position will oversee activities and projects for the Campus Planning team. They will work closely with Construction Project Managers and their project design teams to address campus planning issues. They will work closely with campus departments, colleges and groups to address planning related issues and their integration with the University Master Plan. They will help in the management of studies and master plans from time to time, including the up coming update to our University Master Plan. They will coordinate with outside agencies and community partners to ensure effective communication about projects happening on or near the University of Utah campus. Field work, data collection, inspection of project activities and progress, research, meeting with campus organizations, peoples and/or departments will all be part of this job.

Responsibilities

  1. Helps manage the integration and implementation of projects into the University of Utah campus through the direction provided in the University Master Plan document.
  2. Help in the management of studies, master plans, visioning processes and related assignments with the use of department management software and to meet all state requirements for these documents when applicable. Ensures the needs of clients are addressed and accomplished within the constraints of policies, procedures and business practices of the University and State of Utah
  3. Reviews construction and design documents for consistency with the Campus Master Plan and planning-related design standards
  4. Works with local agencies, departments, municipalities, and community groups to coordinate as appropriate and communicate campus projects or outside projects that may have impacts to greater campus areas
  5. Helps guide efforts in exploring planning issues of importance to the campus community, and identifying and implementing solutions.
  6. Actively communicates and prepares documents and presentations related to campus projects to share with clients, campus leadership, the Board of Trustees, DFCM , state boards, other campus stakeholders, local jurisdictions and entities, the campus community and neighborhood partners
  7. Proactively looks for opportunities to grow and improve campus through training opportunities, improving professional skills and collaboration.
  8. Works closely with the Planning team to communicate opportunities, issues or concerns related to campus projects
  9. Assists with other department and division needs as requested

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience), plus three years of support experience in an administrative environment. A commitment to provide excellent customer service required. Demonstrated human relations, communication, managerial, negotiating, planning and analytical skills are essential to this position. Computer competencies include Word Office, as well as working knowledge of AutoCAD and GIS .

Preferences

  • Bachelors degree in Planning, Landscape Architecture, Architecture or related field. Familiarity with planning practices, particularly as they relate to urban or campus design, transportation, ecology, landscape design, historic preservation or sustainability.
  • A graduate degree in Planning, Landscape Architecture, or Architecture, or a comparable amount of professional experience in a related field.
