Job Summary

UtahPresents seeks an Audio Technician to join its full-time production team, reporting to the Production Manager and working alongside the Master Electrician and Stage Manager.

The Audio Technician performs a variety of tasks associated with presenting live productions. The Audio Technician will be primarily responsible for supporting the audio needs of events in Kingsbury Hall and other venues with programming by UtahPresents. Additional assignments will include general stagehand work (electrical, rail, deck, load-in/outs, etc.), projections, streaming, and other aspects of presenting live entertainment.

Events include the UtahPresents series, campus events including student performances, and rentals. They span live music, theater, dance, comedy, multidisciplinary work, film, lectures, conferences, graduations, and more. Supported venues include proscenium theaters, black box spaces, concert halls, and found spaces ranging from atriums to fields to museum spaces to Vimeo. Most events occur at Kingsbury Hall, one of Salt Lake City’s iconic theaters at the heart of University of Utah’s campus with a capacity of 1,992.

Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS :

  • Serve as audio engineer for assigned events: loading in, running, and loading out the show
  • Advance audio needs for shows/events coming to Kingsbury Hall or partner venues
  • On a per-show basis, augment or design and implement sound systems for UtahPresents venues
  • Record and edit audio, including house announcements
  • Inspect, maintain, and inventory sound equipment; make recommendations for new equipment and procedures
  • Supervise part-time crews during set-up and tear-down of sound systems
  • Be a willing and collaborative participant in the department and campus community, helping with inter-departmental projects
  • Work a variable schedule, including nights and weekends
  • Other duties as assigned by production manager

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS :

  • Demonstrated live engineering of spoken word (theatre, lectures) and music (musicals, bands, pre-recorded) using digital consoles and wireless microphones
  • Experience with audio software, including QLab and Q- SYS
  • Experience with Allen & Heath DLive Series and Dante Networking
  • Computer skills, including Mac OS, networked AV, ZOOM productions, and virtual machines
  • Instructional and teaching skills; ability to train and work with student workers, most of whom have little or no experience
  • A steady energy level and calm demeanor; ability to navigate challenges with creativity, flexibility, patience, tenacity, and a sense of humor
  • A team-based approach to the work environment
  • Ability to work effectively with a variety of personalities and skill levels, bringing expertise and excellent customer service to interactions with presented artists, campus partners, renters, etc.
  • Able to withstand long hours of concentrated physical activity, including reaching overhead and lifting 50+ pounds
  • Able to climb ladders and work at heights over 20 feet
  • Able to move heavy equipment and work with a variety of power tools and electronic systems
  • Physical limitations cannot totally hinder the ability to perform tasks

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in a related field plus one year directly related experience or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience). Demonstrated ability to work independently, analyze and make decisions related to program content. Strong coordination and organizational skills required to prioritize conflicting deadlines. Demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills are also required.
