Job Summary

The University of Utah Department of Intercollegiate Athletics is seeking an experienced communications professional to serve as the primary communications and media contact for the Utah Athletics department, and oversee and direct all aspects of the athletics communications office for Utah’s 20 Division I sports programs and oversee communication services. The Associate Athletics Director for Strategic Communications will also be responsible to implement the athletics department’s strategic and proactive external communications strategy to tell its stories, and promote and advance the mission of Utah Athletics. This position will also coordinate and work in a manner that helps support and build the university’s brand and reputation, in collaboration with University Marketing and Communications. This position will serve on the Athletics Department’s Senior Staff.

Responsibilities

Serve as the primary communications and media contact for the Utah Athletics department.

•Provide direct support of Director of Athletics with various types of communications needs and projects.

•Responsible for the development, oversight and execution of a strategic communications plan that builds and protects the reputation of Utah Athletics and each of its 20 Division I sports programs.

•Establish and maintain positive and professional relationships, as well as serve as the department’s public information and communications contact with local, regional, and national media outlets to facilitate the ongoing partnership between the community, campus, media and Utah Athletics.

•Responsible for creating a proactive sales-minded culture within the communications department to meet the objectives and goals of the external affairs efforts of the athletics department. Serve as the primary communications contact for the athletics department with responsibilities including but not limited to original content, storytelling and human interest stories, staff bios and directory, talking points and external presentations, social distribution, awards nominations, media operations, vetting of interview requests and scheduling.

•Strategic planning and coordination of all major press events and announcements, including press conferences, major personnel announcements, capital projects and the introduction of new initiatives.

•Media Relations contact for football.

•Advise and facilitate media strategies for handling crisis management.

•Coordinate student-athlete nominations for University, Conference,NCAA, State and national awards.

•Contribute to the department’s social media messaging and coordinate with Marketing on the content calendar.

•Write, edit and design publications for the department and other areas as needed; including copy writing and editing for marketing and ticket office advertising and sales materials.

•Liaison to multi-media rights partner for all department functions in the area of radio broadcasts. Serve as department representative interacting with station general managers and program directors to build relationships and maximize exposure.

•Position requires the ability to work evenings/weekends on a frequent basis. Attendance is required at home events and selected away events. Travel with teams is expected in fulfillment of this objective.

•Other duties as assigned by the Director of Athletics or Deputy Athletics Director for External Operations.

Oversee and direct communication and media operations, the official athletics website, video and photography for Utah’s 20 Division I sports programs.

•Supervise 13 full-time staff and students who serve as primary communications, media, and video/streaming contacts for various sports, as well as department budget and resource allocation.

•Supervise the management of sport specific game day media operations for all home Intercollegiate Athletics and championship events, including local and national media relations and hospitality, credentialing, staffing, scoring, statistics, media relations, press seating, press conferences and other essential game day responsibilities. Provide overall day-to-day management, supervision and operation of the Communications office; including fulfillment of the department’s communication goals and strategies.

•Regular communication and interaction with coaches and sports programs.

•Establish the standards and provide leadership to complete the responsibilities set forth to fulfill the goals and objectives of External Operations—as a department and within each sport.

•Position will provide Communications staff with vision and leadership for content, production, and execution of communications and media services for all sports. Oversight of official athletics website (utahutes.com) as a primary engagement channel for the department, including original content, content strategy and management, usability, daily updating and editing, removal of dated pages, analytics and the site’s platform design.

•Oversight of email updates, including content creation and calendar, actively increasing subscribers, and coordinating with marketing on distribution to subscriber segments.

•Develop and implement strategy for departmental, Pac-12, regional andNCAAstatistical data bases, including awards/honors, annual achievements and highlights (NCAAand Pac-12 team and individual championships, academic honors) and digital assets (photos, video).

•Collaborate with Marketing, Community Relations, Creative Services and other internal departments to develop strategies that promote the business interests and reputation of Utah Athletics, including integrating and supporting marketing and sales interests through communications and digital marketing.

•Conduct regular staff meetings to coordinate fulfillment of responsibilities, content creation ideas and coordinate content calendar.

•Serve on internal committees as needed.

•Ensure that all assigned units are operated in compliance with University, Pac-12 Conference, andNCAArules and regulations.

•Maintain media policies.

Implement strategic and proactive external communications strategy to promote and advance the mission of Utah Athletics.

•Strategic vision and implementation of a plan to promote the department and advance its mission.

•Proactively pitch story ideas to local and national media.

•Initiate and lead internal departments to develop content and actively tell the department’s story.

•Actively work for greater reach and placement of stories to enhance Utah Athletics; working with individual coaches, communication services and marketing staff to enhance the Utah Athletics brand, message and story in the local, regional and national media.

Coordinate and work in a manner that helps support and build the university’s brand and reputation, in collaboration with University Marketing and Communications.

•Serve as the primary media contact for Utah Athletics with campus.

•Serve as assistant Pac-12 Networks Liaison and coordinate with the Pac-12 Networks and conference office to ensure consistency of communication and implementation of Conference-wide strategies.

Minimum Qualifications

Master’s Degree.

•Proven demonstrated results in intercollegiate athletics communications.

•Demonstrated ability to exercise sound judgment to handle sensitive and confidential information/material with discretion.

•Superior public relations skills, including outstanding interpersonal skills to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
