Job Summary

As part of the Department of Surgery Administrative and Financial team, this position will be instrumental in developing and implementing policies, programs and financial objectives for the Department and its nine Divisions in relation to accounting and finance functions, including (but not limited to) financial analysis and reporting, general accounting, payroll, cost accounting, budget formulation, and treasury. Participates in preparing department budgets and enacting Department and Division goals.

Responsibilities

1.In coordination with the Administrative Director, develops plans and implements financial objectives for assigned Divisions consistent with the University’s goals and objectives.

2.Significant efforts in preparation and analysis of financial data and reporting of information to team, Department, and Divisions.

3.Brings creativity, motivation, flexibility, and strong work ethic.

4.Develops and manages Divisions’ budgets, projects budgetary requirements for special projects and initiatives.

5.Implements and administers new and existing Department/Division programs and services to internal and external customers. Evaluates program effectiveness.

6.Participates in the development and interpretation of Department/Division polices to ensure compliance with the University’s policies and regulatory requirements. Ensures compliance with Federal and state regulations.

7.Establishes internal objectives and implements procedures to meet goals. Assists in setting Department/Divisions short and long-term goals.

8.Facilitates cooperative and collaborative relationships with the divisions,SOMDean’s Office,SVPHSOffice, University Hospital, and other departments.

9.Serves as part of the Department Administrative and Financial team.

Problem Solving

The problems and solutions encountered by this position vary depending on the area and structure of the department. This position frequently addresses problematic situations and often acts a mediator or a negotiator. A major task for this position is to understand the needs of individuals and determine what products and services should be provided to meet those needs.

The incumbent must be proficient in making daily operational decisions in assigned areas to ensure compliance of current regulations and guidelines.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Business or Public Administration, a related area, or equivalency required; plus six years of progressively more responsible management experience; and demonstrated leadership, human relations and effective communication skills also required. Master’s degree in Business Administration or related area preferred. This position is not responsible for providing patient care. Applicants must demonstrate the potential ability to perform the essential functions of the job as outlined in the position description.

Previous work experience in an academic health care setting.

Previous work experience in an academic medical school setting.

Master’s degree in Business Administration or related area preferred.

Adaptable to the “continuum of change” in the health care environment.
