The Department of Biomedical Informatics at the University of Utah is recruiting an early or mid-career (Assistant or Associate level) Tenure Track faculty position as part of a new initiative in collaboration with the University of Utah’s The Scientific Computing and Imaging ( SCI ) Institute. We are seeking an Assistant or Associate Professor Faculty (Tenure Track) Position with demonstrated abilities in teaching and research. This hire will expand the core research expertise at the SCI Institute and DBMI , further enhance its strong research reputation in scientific, information, and biomedical visualization; image and data analysis; and interdisciplinary scientific computing. A major goal is to attract new partnerships across the University and beyond. Candidates whose research expertise integrates social and technical aspects are of particular interest, as are candidates who can contribute to the University’s diversity.

We are particularly interested in candidates with demonstrated expertise in clinical informatics, clinical research informatics, or translational bioinformatics with a focus on computational (including but not limited to ML and AI) and/or visualization methods. Application areas include but are not limited to EHR data, clinical trial data, omics data, imaging data, and multi-modal data sources, applied to all fields relevant to human health. Candidates should demonstrate ability to perform word class research in these areas by a strong publication record in highly ranked biomedical journals and technical journals or conferences. Prior experience with national funding agencies, such as NIH , DOD , AHRQ , HRSA , or NSF , is highly desirable. Candidates who are recipients of NSF or NIH career awards will be especially considered.

Candidates are expected to have a PhD degree from a quantitative field, such as Biomedical informatics, computer science, engineering, computational biology, applied mathematics, statistics, applied physics, etc. Candidates with a professional doctoral degree (MD, PharmD, DNP , DDS , DO, etc.) are also welcomed to apply if they have a demonstrated track record in the relevant areas and have previous training in the quantitative fields listed above.

All candidates are invited to submit a curriculum vitae; a cover letter containing a description of professional experience (including scientific accomplishments, leadership responsibilities, and 3 references); a research plan (up to 3 pages); teaching strategy (up to 1 page); and a statement of past, present, and future commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion (up to 1 page) directly to the SCI Institute discussing their vision for interdisciplinary, computational oncology research leadership. This research should fit in the context of the SCI Institute’s mission of multidisciplinary bridge building (http://www.sci.utah.edu/the-institute/bridges.html) and the overall academic mission of the Department of Biomedical Informatics.

The Department of Biomedical Informatics traditionally hosts collaborations that cross the University of Utah Health Sciences Center, the Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Intermountain Healthcare, and the Utah Department of Health. The Department of Biomedical Informatics at the University of Utah works in a rich environment that emphasizes research in life sciences, health sciences, health services research, and informatics in collaboration with colleagues in various Schools and Colleges including Medicine, Nursing, and Pharmacy. The Department of Biomedical Informatics is one of the most mature informatics programs in the United States, offering postdoctoral training, Ph.D. and Master of Science degrees and a graduate certificate program. The Department of Biomedical Informatics is a National Library of Medicine Biomedical informatics training site. The Department is co-located and cooperative with the program in Nursing Informatics.
