Assistant/Associate Professor (Clinical)

The University of Utah College of Pharmacy, in collaboration with Smith’s Pharmacy, is seeking nominations and applications for a clinical track faculty member and clinical pharmacist who will practice at Smith’s Pharmacy. This full-time clinical track position will be at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor and will be available in Fall 2021.

The University of Utah, College of Pharmacy is located in the state-of-the-art L.S. Skaggs Research Institute and is part of University of Utah Health, an umbrella health sciences center encompassing a wide scope of clinical and research enterprises. The College of Pharmacy is ranked among the top five in terms of National Institutes of Health research productivity and in the top twenty list of PharmD programs in the nation. The Department has a unique mix of clinical, research and tenured faculty to support the training of professional and graduate students. Faculty have the opportunity to collaborate with health services researchers across University of Utah Health in the Departments of Family and Preventive Medicine, Pediatrics, Population Health Sciences, the Veterans Administration IDEAS Center, the Program in Personalized Health Care, the Huntsman Cancer Institute, Department of Economics and various other academic Departments in the School of Medicine, as well as within the Department through the Pharmacotherapy Outcomes Research Center. U Health also has an NIH funded Center of Clinical and Translational Science ( CCTS ). The environment is highly conducive for interdisciplinary and translational research.

Responsibilities of the position:

Teaching (40%): The faculty member will be expected to teach in the didactic curriculum of the College of Pharmacy, will coordinate 1-2 courses, and will serve as a clerkship preceptor for pharmacy students.

Clinical Practice (50%): The faculty member’s practice site will be in the area of community pharmacy at Smith’s Pharmacy in Salt Lake City. The faculty member will be responsible to a Smith’s Pharmacy Manager for practice responsibilities and will work together with pharmacists and technicians employed by the practice site. Practice site activities will include providing direct patient care services including immunizations, health coaching, medication management and other advanced clinical services, consulting with patients and providers regarding drug therapy, and supporting day-to-day operations of the department.

Scholarship (5%): Faculty are expected to participate in producing scholarly works, which may include clinical research, outcomes research, review articles, book chapters, and case reports. Presentations at local, regional, and national meetings will also be expected.

Service (5%): Participation on college, department, and university committees is expected. In addition, faculty members serve as advisors to student organizations, and are expected to be active in local and national professional service.


Applicants should hold a PharmD degree and have completed a PGY1 residency, preferably in the area of community pharmacy. Applicants should demonstrate excellence in clinical practice, have a strong desire for teaching and scholarship in an academic environment, and demonstrate the ability to initiate clinical pharmacy services in a community pharmacy setting. This position may require the successful completion of a criminal background check and/or drug screen and immunizations. Pharmacist licensure or eligibility for licensure in Utah is required.

Salary is commensurate with experience.

Special Instructions for Candidates

This position is technically a 1.0 FTE , however, the department will only be paying 50% of salary and Smith’s Food and Drug will be paying the other 50% of salary directly to applicant hired. Applicant hired would receive benefits as if they were a full-time faculty member.
