The Division of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) at the University of Utah School of Medicine is seeking a clinical health psychologist with a specialty in bariatrics and weight management for a full-time faculty position. Our division has a strong and longstanding relationship with the Comprehensive Weight Management Program ( CWMP ) at the University of Utah. Our PM&R psychologists have provided comprehensive pre-surgical psychological evaluations for bariatric surgery candidates for the past 8 years. The bariatric surgery and weight management programs have grown substantially over that timeframe and we have expanded our role as integrated members of the interdisciplinary team, including bariatric surgeons, obesity medicine physicians, registered dietitians, and exercise physiologists. We have also expanded psychology treatment services offered to both surgical and non-surgical patients through the CWMP .

We are looking for an energetic academically oriented psychologist who will support this continued growth. Rank will be dependent upon the selected applicant’s qualifications. Duties will include maintaining a strong clinical practice involving primarily outpatient pre-bariatric surgery psychological evaluations (including extensive psychological assessment battery, clinical interview, case conceptualization, report writing, feedback), as well as associated psychological treatment services. Responsibilities will involve collaboration with and consultation with the interdisciplinary treatment team, evidence-based individual and group psychotherapy, and both face-to-face and tele-mental health formats.

The new psychologist will join our collaborative team of PM&R psychologists (including clinical health, rehabilitation, and neuropsychologists) who provide inpatient and outpatient services to individuals living with traumatic brain injury, stroke, spinal cord injury, amputation, multiple sclerosis, and orthopedic or other pain concerns. As a faculty member, the individual would be expected to support the leadership, service, education, and research goals of the University of Utah’s School of Medicine. Clinical coverage responsibilities are expected. We are growing clinical research programs with both bariatric and rehabilitation patient populations and would be excited for the new hire to be engaged in research. Faculty are expected to support our ongoing training programs, especially psychology trainees, through offering supervised training opportunities, regular didactic presentations, and participating in training committees. Within bariatric and weight management psychology, we currently offer a one-year postdoctoral fellowship and rotations to practicum students from the University of Utah Psychology department. We also house within our division postdoctoral fellowships in rehabilitation psychology and neuropsychology, and other traineeships at the practicum and intern levels.

Experience and interest in health psychology with a specialty in bariatric and weight management psychology are necessary. Education requirements for this position include completion of a doctoral degree in clinical or counseling psychology from an APA -accredited graduate school, completion of a one-year internship at an APA -accredited program, and completion of a one or two-year postdoctoral fellowship in health psychology. Applicants already board-certified, or eligible to apply for board certification in health psychology, are preferred. Attainment of board certification within five years of hire is strongly encouraged.

SHC is the location for the CWMP and allows for increasingly integrated services, including space for the provision of psychology services to patients. In recognition of the high-quality, patient-centered care, the bariatric surgery program at the CWMP has been accredited by the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program as a comprehensive center.

The state-of-the-art 75-bed Craig H. Neilsen Rehabilitation Hospital ( NRH ) opened in Spring 2020. NRH is one of the most advanced rehabilitation facilities in the nation and will serve as a catalyst for the further development of the University’s rehabilitation programs. NRH is the location for the outpatient PM&R Psychology Clinic.
