The Utah Museum of Fine Arts ( UMFA ) at the University of Utah is looking for a highly motivated and well-organized individual to support the Collections and Exhibitions team in an energetic, creative, and supportive environment. The Assistant Preparator, working under the direction of the Deputy Director of Planning and Program and/or other Collections and Exhibitions staff as assigned, assists in the preparation for, installation, and deinstallation of temporary and permanent exhibitions.
The Assistant Preparator will assist with fabricating and finishing exhibition cases, pedestals, risers and other exhibition elements according to provided specifications. In preparation for exhibitions he/she/they will build and/or install exhibition elements including walls, temporary wall systems, and theatrical elements in exhibitions spaces. As assigned the Assistant Preparator will carry out the repair and painting of walls, exhibition cases, and fixtures as required. As assigned the Assistant Preparator participates in the unpacking of shipping crates, moving of art objects and the installation of art objects for temporary and permanent exhibitions. During installation he/she/they will participate in the layout of art objects as instructed.
As assigned the Assistant Preparator participates in the deinstallation of art objects, moving of art objects and the packing of shipping crates for temporary and permanent exhibitions. He/She/They will also participate in the preparation of galleries between installations including the removal of exhibition cases, temporary walls, and other exhibition elements as required.
Other Fabrication Projects:
The Assistant Preparator may fabricate shipping crates, storage platforms, and other items for the needs of the exhibitions and collections functions of the Museum as required. He/She/They may also perform exhibition related tasks as needed for Museum special events and for other public spaces on the University campus as directed.
He/She/They performs additional duties as assigned.
Five years experience in exhibit preparation, carpentry and fabrication or equivalency required. Working knowledge of display techniques and specifications including understanding of various materials used in fabricating displays; ability to secure and pack materials for shipping. Demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills are required in order to interpret instructions and present exhibit preparation information. This position is not responsible for providing patient care. Applicants must demonstrate the potential ability to perform the essential functions of the job as outlined in the position description.
•Experience in cabinet making/woodworking and use of common shop tools is a plus.
•Prepping and painting experience.
•Museum Preparator experience is desirable.
•Able to easily lift at least fifty pounds from floor to approximately fifty inches.
•Able to safely carry at least fifty pounds for thirty feet.
•Able to climb a twenty-foot ladder.
•Operate power tools requiring two hands.
•Pass a criminal background check.
•Have excellent vision or vision that can be corrected to excellent with glasses or contacts.
