Job Summary

The Office of Orientation & Transition’s primary focus is to assist new students and their families as they transition to the University through comprehensive programming that takes place throughout the calendar year. This includes New Student Orientation ( NSO ), Swoop Camp Extended Orientation, Weeks of Welcome, and Parent, Family & Supporter Orientation ( PFSO ). The office is hiring an Assistant Director who will work as part of the leadership team to support a variety of programs and initiatives. Responsibilities

  • Represent the Office of Orientation & Transition, the Division of Enrollment Management, and the University of Utah with professionalism and good judgment.
  • Lead the planning, implementation and staffing of project(s) or program(s), such as first-year New Student Orientation ( NSO ), Transfer NSO , Parent/Family/Supporter programs and other activities designed to welcome and prepare university students.
  • Manage recruitment, selection, training, supervision, motivation, and evaluation of staff including graduate intern(s), office staff, and undergraduate student leaders.
  • Oversee and implement marketing and communication of program(s) and initiatives
  • Communicate effectively and work collaboratively with OOT team
  • Project, manage, and account for program budgets
  • Assess programs and events to identify improvements for the future
  • Meet regularly with OOT Director to ensure appropriate coordination and support
  • Play an active role in supporting office and Enrollment Management division programs and initiatives
  • Assist in the creation and editing of all office communications, marketing, and web materials
  • Create strong collaboration and engagement with campus partners through excellent communication and follow through
  • Demonstrate organization, attention to detail, ability to execute tasks independently and ability to ask for assistance as appropriate
  • Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in a related field plus one year directly related experience or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience). Demonstrated ability to work independently, analyze and make decisions related to program content. Strong coordination and organizational skills required to prioritize conflicting deadlines. Demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills are also required.

Preferences

  1. Master’s Degree in related field preferred.
  2. Two or more years in related professional experience in higher education.
  3. Experience working with first year and/or transfer students, faculty, administrative staff, and student groups.
  4. Strong demonstrated collaboration skills
  5. Effective written and verbal communication skills
  6. Demonstrated commitment to and experience creating an inclusive environment
  7. Prior event planning experience
  8. Prior program development and event coordination experience
  9. Prior student staff supervisory and/or advisory experience
  10. Knowledge of student development and other academic concepts related to welcoming and orienting college age students.
  11. Experience in marketing and communications
