Position Summary: The University of Utah, College of Nursing is seeking a qualified gerontologist for an administrative faculty appointment as an Assistant Dean for the Gerontology Interdisciplinary Program ( GIP ). This position will combine leadership, teaching, and scholarship in the Gerontology Interdisciplinary Program. The College of Nursing’s GIP includes an interdisciplinary MS program with a baccalaureate minor and graduate and baccalaureate certificate options.

Criteria : Earned doctorate degree in gerontology or related field from an accredited University, with academic and administrative experience appropriate to the specialty area. Knowledgeable about the issues of aging, higher education, research/scholarship, online/distance learning, and care delivery. Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and productively with individuals and groups, and demonstrated leadership/management abilities in interdisciplinary environments. At least three years of experience in a faculty role with a successful track record of didactic teaching, scholarly productivity, and service is required, preferably within a research-intensive academic environment. A program of research in gerontology is required.

Principal Functions and Responsibilities: The Assistant Dean of the GIP serves as a full-time faculty member in the tenure-line or career-line and provides leadership of gerontology faculty, students, and staff to assure quality outcomes at both the undergraduate and graduate level. This includes maintaining Program of Merit Status within the Academy for Gerontology in Higher Education ( AGHE ), and mapping/assessment of curricula to align with the AGHE Gerontology Competencies for Undergraduate and Graduate Education. Assists with recruitment, admission, progression, and retention of students. Oversees the implementation and evaluation of the GIP and its curriculum policies and procedures. Advances the program locally, regionally, nationally and internationally.

Areas of Major Responsibility:

A. Lead strategic market planning and participate in recruitment and advisement of GIP students.

B. Coordinate admission process and caucus in concordance with University and College policies and guidelines.

C. Facilitate student applications for scholarships and fellowships.

D. Provide mentorship and assistance to faculty advisors and graduate supervisory committees.

E. Monitor and support student progression through the program.

F. Oversee the evaluation of the Gerontology Interdisciplinary Program and provide an annual report to the College of Nursing.

G. Submit applications for funding to obtain additional support for GIP development and innovation.

H. Chair the Gerontology Interdisciplinary Program Advisory Committee

I. Serve as a member of the Academic Program Team, Directors of Graduate Programs’ Committee, and on the steering committee of the University of Utah Center on Aging.

J. Collaborate with Division Chairs on faculty orientation and resources

K. Coordinate and lead efforts to enhance online/distance learning through collaboration with UOnline, Teaching and Learning Technologies, and the Center for Teaching and Learning Excellence.

L. Works with the Office of Academic Programs and Student Services on scheduling, registration, recruitment, admission, matriculation, orientation, and progression procedures and issues.

M. Promote internal and external interdisciplinary partnerships to enhance community-based experiential opportunities for students and faculty.

Reporting Relationships: Individual will report to the Associate Dean for Academic Programs in the administrative role, and to the Division Chair of Health Systems and Community-Based Care in the faculty role.

Projected FTE : The projected FTE for this role is 0.3.
