Job Summary
Maintains and reconciles ledgers and accounts according to generally accepted accounting principles. Prepares reports and financial statements based upon derived statistics and analysis performed.
This is a Category I position: Mandatory Required on Campus or at Health Care Facilities.
Main Campus staff: Employees and/or functions designated as mandatory, requiring employees to be physically located on campus in order to maintain campus systems and operations if they are healthy without COVID symptoms.
U of U Health Academics Faculty and Staff: All employees necessary for the direct on-site support of clinical operations, patient care, and essential research activities if they are healthy without COVID -19 symptoms.
Responsibilities
Performs a variety of accounting activities, including, but not limited to the following:
l.Analyzes and monitors budgets and expenditures for compliance with fiscal accountability and reporting requirements. Tracks and reports revenue and expenditures.
2.Reviews circuit inventory, pay invoices, work with internet vendors and track billing activity.
3.Works in UShop to create purchase orders and pay invoices.
4.Reviews expense and accounting documents for accuracy and appropriate approvals; analyzes to ensure transactions are charged to the appropriate accounts. Makes correcting entries as necessary.
5.Reconciles general ledger and supporting journal entries.
6.Assists with asset management; helps track and control department equipment inventory
7.Aids with preparation of annual external audits.
8.May supervise or train lower level accounting staff.
9.Performs other duties as required and assigned within the department
PROBLEM SOLVING
The Accountant follows University policies and procedures and follows applicable state and IRS guidelines. The incumbent refers issues outside of policy or not covered by policy to the supervisor.
The Accountant has the authority to determine correct account numbers, and ensure correct accounting procedures are followed. The incumbent answers questions from staff and vendors on invoice status, payroll problems, etc., and must be able to meet deadlines and establish priorities.
Challenges encountered by employees in this position include communicating effectively with various University departments. Reports prepared must be in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles and federal, state and University policies and procedures.
AUTHORITY / ACCOUNTABILITY
This position has the authority to analyze, document and report the financial stability or instability of accounts using generally accepted accounting principles. This position works under general supervision to complete assigned work. Day-to-day work is performed independently by following established procedures and regulations. Assignments are received with general instructions on desired results but without specific instruction on methods.
REPORTING RELATIONSHIP
The UETN Accountant reports to the UETN Financial Management Analyst.

Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance or a related field, plus one year related experience or equivalency required. A thorough understanding of general ledger accounting practices, cost analysis and accounting principles, as well as demonstrated analytical, problem solving, human relations and effective communication skills also required.
Knowledge of PeopleSoft or Access databases may be preferred in some areas.
