Job Summary

The Absence Management Technician is a customer-friendly member of the Human Resources department that is dedicated to providing exceptional service to all employees of the University of Utah. They are dedicated to accuracy, efficiency, and providing excellent customer service. The Absence Management team excels at building relationships, problem-solving, and conflict management. This position is a great opportunity to increase human resource knowledge and skills in a fast-paced, team oriented, environment. Beginning July 1, 2021, University of Utah HR Management is piloting Hybrid work. The Absence Management Technician will work a minimum of 1 day per week from HR located in downtown SLC , and the remaining days from home. An employee hired into this role will be responsible for providing space, telephone, printing, networking and/or internet capabilities at the telecommute location and agree to the terms of the University of Utah campus and Health Academics COVID -19 Telecommuting Agreement.


Essential Functions

  • Administers and manages the leave of absence, disability, work place injury programs and other related duties.
  • Identifies and researches difficult issues related to leaves of absence.
  • Interprets Family Medical Leave Act ( FMLA ), Families First Coronavirus Relief Act ( FFCRA ), Short and Long Term Disability ( STD , LTD ) and Worker’s Compensation (WC) plans, programs, policies and procedures for employees and provides advice and recommendations for remediation of escalated issues and plan / process improvements.
  • Responds to employee and department inquiries regarding leave plans and programs, vacation donations, and any other Absence Management-related functions.
  • Acts as a liaison between the employee and applicable third party administrators.
  • Maintains all employee records accurately in all applicable systems.
  • Administers HR-related processes compliant with applicable laws, rules and regulations.
  • Appropriately handles controversial or sensitive employee issues with discretion.
  • Meets all required deadlines.

Minimum Qualifications

Three years office experience with at least one year experience in Human Resources or equivalency required. Demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills also required. Data entry experience is preferred. This position has no responsibility for providing care to patients.


  • Previous experience with FMLA procedures and processes.
  • Demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills.
  • Cross-cultural competence and ability to contribute to the University’s commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion.
  • Exceptional verbal/written skills and attention to detail.
  • Advanced computer skills, including Microsoft Office applications.
  • Data entry experience.
  • PeopleSoft experience preferred.
