Program Description:

Too many Utah high school students are not going on to college. Though college is accessible to everyone in Utah—the majority of the public colleges and universities in the state are open-access, meaning anyone can attend—many high school students don’t think college is possible for them. And even if they do, many have no idea where to even start. These problems are often especially true for those with significant barriers to college entry, such as students who are low-income, first-generation, or underrepresented.

This program is an expansion of the Utah College Advising Corps, a University of Utah program that, for over ten years, has successfully helped students navigate the process of getting into college. This program has been in 12 Utah high schools since 2007 and has demonstrated effectiveness in improving college enrollment and college graduation rates.

As the Board of Regents enters into its 50th year, it is making a permanent mark on Utah’s future landscape by expanding the college access advising program into an additional 21 schools in the state. By making this investment in getting more students to attend—and graduate from—college, especially those who likely would not have otherwise attended, this expanded college access adviser program will:

• Increase college enrollment

• Increase college graduation

• Change the course of intergenerational poverty

The college access adviser assists Utah high school students in realizing their post-secondary dreams by advising students with college admissions, financial aid, and scholarship applications; coordinating information with high school staff at the student’s school.

Job Summary:

College advisers seek to help more Utah students attend college. Recent college graduates will serve as college access advisers in selected public secondary institutions throughout the state. Working alongside school staff, advisers will assist students with navigating the college admissions process. This includes, but is not limited to, admissions applications, financial aid forms and scholarship applications, and college entrance examination registration and preparation.

This position is on a 10-month contract and begins August 5, 2019, and ends May 31, 2020 (the end date is subject to change and may be earlier depending on the last day of school).

This job entails working with underage youth, and as such you will be required to complete and pass the following:

• Criminal background check

• Fingerprinting

Timeline:

1. Applications are being accepted until May 31, 2019.

2. Candidates for interview will be notified early to mid-June.

3. Decisions will be made by early to mid-July.

4. The position begins on August 5, 2019.

Responsibilities

•Participate in a two-week intensive summer training program, beginning August 5, 2019, to prepare advisers on admissions processes, financial aid and scholarships, test preparation, and working with diverse populations.

•Provides one-on-one, timely, and relevant information on college admissions processes, financing college, as well as registering for and takingACT/SATexaminations.

•Encourages each student to consider a broad range of appropriate college choices.

•Helps each student complete and submit admissions and financial-aid applications.

•Assists each student in interpreting correspondence from colleges, including offers of admission and financial aid.

•Encourages students and their families to consider, plan for, and apply to colleges and universities.

•Organizes events

•Visits classrooms, assemblies, and club meetings to offer advising services and emphasize the importance of college.

•Establishes productive working relationships with principals, counselors, and teachers in the assigned high school.

•Assess in consultations with the program director and school personnel, the particular needs of each school, and adapt programs and activities to meet these needs.

•Actively seeking the advice and counsel of the on-site supervisor at each partner high school.

•Assists in the efforts of other advisers within the service area.

•Helps organize; provide support for, and attending evening and weekend events organized by other advisers.

•Assists in the assessment and long-term sustainability of the program.

•Assists the program director and evaluation staff to identify, collect, and interpret key progress and outcome variables to evaluate the effectiveness of the program.

•Assist students with finding scholarship resources outside of college/university and government funding.

•Submits monthly progress reports to the program director documenting progress and outcome data.

•Maintains expertise in admissions and financial aid advising.

•Consults with the program director to seek out and participate in other opportunities for professional development.

•Performs other related duties as assigned.

Preferences

A Bachelor’s degree (obtained by the end of summer 2019) is required.

Bilingual, Spanish-speaker a plus.
