The Director of Community Engagement is primarily responsible for coordinating with and enhancing community participation with community based organizations, companies, government units, and individuals.

University of Utah Health is involved in many community support activities that have the potential/need for additional coordination and expansion that will maximize value to the community. The work specifically must being with the managing and establishing of new relationships that enhance awareness of Healthy U within underserved communities. Healthy U membership and retention growth goals throughout the region of coverage by University of Utah Health Plans and UofU Health must be enhanced in these efforts.

This position will manage and coordinate community efforts for University of Utah Health, including University of Utah Health Plans and the associated teams, along with partnerships throughout University of Utah Health, University Health Sciences, and the University of Utah Campus Academics and outreach & awareness efforts.

This position will also manage Health Plan Outreach Coordinators, who assist in developing, scheduling, and participating in outreach functions. This position will have a reporting line to both University of Utah Health Plans and to the University of Utah Hospitals and Clinics CEO. As the work of the position evolves over time within the Health Plan and U Health, additional input and working relationships may develop.

Our ideal candidate will have a minimum of:

  • Bachelor's degree in Health Care Administration, Business Administration, or related area or equivalency.

  • Six years of progressive management experience.

  • Performs to required standards for job specific responsibilities and technical competencies.

Talent Management

  • Hiring, training, developing, and communicating with staff.

Financial Management

  • Responsible for developing, monitoring and achieving budget goals.

  • Manages labor and non-labor expenses to budget or flex budget.

  • Manages revenue to budget to maximize potential revenue.

Performance Management

  • Responsible to provide staff feedback on performance, including on-time appraisals and coaching.

  • Responsible to deal with conflicts in a proactive manner and to reach resolution in a timely manner.

Building Relationships

  • Forms positive relationships with staff, peers, and senior leadership to support the mission, vision, values, and performance standards of the organization.

  • Actively engages staff with updates and news as well as involving staff in decisions and work teams. Provides feedback and recognition when appropriate.

  • Creates and enhances community relationships to increase membership within UUHP and involvement and awareness of U Health.

Knowledge / Skills / Abilities

  • Ability to perform the essential functions of the job as outlined above.

  • Demonstrated skills in human relations and effective communication skills.

  • Knowledge of hospitals and clinics and health plan business operations and demonstrated strategic planning skills.

  • Demonstrated success in developing relationships with community leaders and organizations.

  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to interact with, support and influence key decision-makers in the provider and payer community is necessary.

  • Ability to professionally represent the organization in social and public settings as well as on various relevant committees and boards, if appointed.

  • Demonstrated excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Ability to work independently and in a group setting.

  • Demonstrated analytical, intuitive and organizational skills.

  • Ability to be flexible as it relates to schedule, responsibilities and priorities.

  • Ability to travel as needed.

  • Demonstrated proficiency in Word, Excel, and Power Point. General proficiency in technology, social media, business intelligence tools and CRM software.



  • Bachelor's degree in Health Care Administration, Business Administration, or related area or equivalency.

Qualifications (Preferred)

  • Master's degree in Health Care Administration, Business Administration, or related area.
