Job Summary

We are seeking highly motivated students to help support the University Support Services Engineering Team within the University Information Technology department. Students at this level work under the direction ofUITstaff. The software engineer student intern position for UIT’s University Support Services will provide a support role in the operations and development of purchased applications used by the University at large. This student intern positon works closely with supervising software engineers and managers for applications used by all areas on campus including: Students, Faculty/Researchers, Finance, HR, Payroll and others. Pay rate starts at $12 per hour. Flexible work schedules available. 19 hours per week is required with options to more hours during school break periods.

Depending on skill level, codes programs/applications according to written specifications and verbal instructions from analysts and lead engineers. Troubleshoots system problems and repairs existing code; investigates vendor system “bugs” and provides input on code fixes and alternative solutions. Follows industry and department programming standards to properly document and ensure code efficiency. Provides accurate time estimates for programming tasks. Tests applications and follows department version control and code promotion guidelines. Attends team meetings, and communicates (verbally and in writing) programming issues to appropriate team leadership.

Minimum Qualifications

•Currently enrolled student status at the University of Utah.

•High level of interest and initiative in learning new technologies.

•Ability to work in a team environment, learns new concepts quickly, and takes initiative to solve problems.

•Basic understanding ofUNIXand Windows environments along with basic desktop application suites.

•Demonstrated ability to work independently with ordinary supervision.

•Excellent verbal and written communications skills.

•Ability to succeed in a team environment with strong commitment to excellence in service.


•Course work or program of study in Computer Science, Computer Information Systems or related area

•Good understanding ofERPbased software implementations

•Fundamental understanding of relational databases includingSQL.

•Experience with programming languages. (C, C++,SQR)

•Experience with writing technical documentation

•Experience with building/executing software unit tests
