Performs complex accounting tasks such as preparing financial statements including balance sheets, cash flow statements andIRSreports. Reviews and analyzes general ledger account balances. Provides guidance to lower level accounting personnel. Reports to the Obstetrics & Gynecology Department, Director of Accounting and Finance.
1.Prepares and assesses financial statements and reports, budgets, cash flow statements, pro forma reports, exception reports and federally required reports.
2.Reconciles project and activity transactions and balances to internal financial systems; and identifies variances so that corrections can be made.
3.Reconciles external financial data with University data and resolves discrepancies.
4.Drafts financial statements for University and University units that are subject to independent audit. Acts as a liaison between University management and auditors to facilitate resolution of issues.
5.Reviews large transactions for accuracy, sufficient funding and proper approvals.
6.Generates journals for distribution of clinical funds into accounting system. Audits, edits and corrects journals to ensure accuracy.
7.Assists client groups with year-end closing to ensure adjustments and accruals are properly recorded.
8.Serves as accounting liaison for assigned departments. Answers questions, corrects errors, resolves accounting related issues and provides financial or other information as requested.
9.Writes queries and macros, and develops department databases.
10.Interprets policies and recommends internal controls.
11.Participates within a multidisciplinary team across multiple locations. Develops and maintains effective and collaborative working relationships with a wide variety of internal/external colleagues and customers.
12.Supervises or provides guidance to lower level accountants.
The Senior Accountant applies accounting standards, state/federal laws and regulations, and University policies and procedures to specific situations and interprets these regulations and principles for others. He or she also advises others on accounting for non-standard transactions. The incumbent must be able to interpret complex policies and effectively communicate the information in an easily understood manner.
The Senior Accountant has the authority to independently plan and prioritize projects and to conduct research and take the necessary corrective actions. The incumbent is required to provide analysis of each situation and use professional judgement in reaching a solution. The incumbent is expected to recommend changes to accounting based procedures based upon analysis performed and specialized knowledge. The incumbent has the authority to advise client departments on accounting issues.

Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field or equivalency, plus two years professional accounting experience. Also required are a thorough knowledge of established accounting principles and practices, knowledge of accounting software, advanced spreadsheet skills, the ability to write queries and macros and demonstrated analytical, problem solving, human relations and effective communication skills.
Certifications as a Certified Public Accountant may be preferred for certain positions.
