Job Summary

Protects and provides security and safety for the patients, visitors and staff at the University of Utah Health Sciences Center and Hospital and/or Huntsman Cancer Institute and Hospital. Performs a wide variety of security functions, including but not limited to: patrolling, camera surveillance, crime prevention, traffic control, motorist and citizen assists, patient intervention and other duties as required.

Required Training:

The incumbent will be required to obtain Crisis Prevention Institute certification (CPI) after being hired. The incumbent will also be required to attend other mandatory trainings as determined or required by the Department of Public Safety; Hospital Security Division and/or University Hospitals and Clinics after being hired.

Responsibilities

• Patrols all of the University Medical Center and/or Hospitals internally and externally as part of a proactive program for the safety and security of the facility. May patrol otherHSC/HCIareas as needed, inspecting buildings, examining doors and windows and checking for intrusions.

• Controls access to the hospital facilities, checks identification, vehicles, packages and administers the limited access for internal doors.

• Locks and unlocks buildings and doors and secures University property as needed.

• Assists the Fire Department by responding to fire alarms in order to unlock buildings and barriers to permit entry.

• Assists the University Police Department by investigating disturbances and referring the call to police if a violation of the law has occurred. Provides assistance to other police agencies as needed.

• Maintains appropriate logs and reports to advise department heads of potential security risks and problems.

• Provides citizen and motorist assists, directions, and any other special services requested.

• Monitors security through closed-circuit hardware and software television systems which includes dispatching, alarms, and phones.

• May assist hospital staff with patient emergencies or interventions, crowd control and other situations as requested.

• The incumbent is exposed to potentially stressful or dangerous situations that result from human behavior and hostile situations that may become assault threatening, necessitating the use of physical force. Incumbents may need to determine when to restrain combative patients, detain persons suspected of criminal activity or trespassing and/or contact University Police for assistance

• The incumbent is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, climb or run up/down stairs, kneel, crouch or crawl and occasional use of hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools or controls. Incumbents occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds and must be physically capable of restraining a combative patient or trespasser potentially with the use of handcuffs. Specific vision requirements include close, distance, color and peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust vision with corrective measures.

• The incumbent is expected to participate in a rotating on-call schedule, 24-hours a day, seven days a week, work weekends and holidays, and to handle emergencies particularly during special events on campus. The incumbent may also be required to respond and work planned or unplanned assignments with short notice

Nearly Continuously: Infectious Diseases (frequent exposure to contagious or infections diseases)

Often: Office environment, outdoor environment, extreme cold, extreme heat, noise (there is sufficient noise to cause you to shout in order to be heard above the noise level), exposure to animals, atmospheric conditions (conditions that affect the respiratory system, such as fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, or poor ventilation)

Seldom: Oils (there is air or skin exposure to oils or other cutting fluids)

Physical Requirements and Level of Frequency that may be required:

Often: Sitting, repetitive hand motion (such as typing), repetitive foot motion (such as using foot controls), bending, twisting, kneeling, squatting, crawling, balancing, reaching overhead, pulling, pushing, lifting – up to 50 pounds, lifting – over 50 pounds

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma,GEDor equivalency and one year security experience or equivalency; successfully pass a background check; demonstrated communications skills; and a commitment to providing excellent customer service required. A valid Utah Driver’s License also required.
