Job Summary

Provides both primary and specialty medical services in a University Health Sciences clinic or hospital unit.

Responsibilities

1. Takes complex medical histories on patients referred for consultation by academic and community physicians.

2. Performs physical examinations.

3. Orders laboratory tests, x-rays, special imaging studies and other diagnostic procedures.

4. May perform bone marrow aspirations and biopsies, skin biopsies, lumbar punctures; administers intrathecal chemotherapy; and may participate in bone marrow harvests.

5. Monitors the level of and adjusts immunosuppressive medications.

6. Orders and supervises the administration of blood products.

7. Reaches tentative diagnosis of medical, surgical and other conditions.

8. Develops treatment plans in conjunction with attending physician to provide optimal patient medical management.

9. Participates in continuing medical education to include specialty and sub-specialty meetings, clubs, boards and conferences.

10. Assists in the collection of data for research projects.

11. Orders consultations and interacts with members of other specialty medical teams.

12. Participates in special projects and committee functions.

Often: Infectious disease, oils ( there is air or skin exposure to oils or other cutting fluids ), hazards ( includes a variety of physical conditions, such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, moving vehicles, electrical current, working on scaffolding and high places, or exposure to chemicals ).

Minimum Qualifications

Current licensure to practice as a Physician’s Assistant from the State of Utah. Certification inACLS/BLS/NRP/ATLSmay be required by your department or by privileging criteria. Demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills are also required.

Utah State prescriptive privileges preferred.

To obtain licensure requires graduation from anARC-PA approved/accredited Physician Assistant program. Specialty experience preferred on a position by position basis.UHPPM1-56 requires that newly hired non-physician providers apply for credentialing and privileging at the time of hire.

Minimum Qualifications

Licensure to practice as an Advance Practice Nurse (APRN) or Physician Assistant (PA) in the State of Utah. Nationally certified as anAPRN/PA as required under State Law. Basic Life Support Health Care Provider card or obtain one within one month of hire; and Advanced Cardiac Life Support certification required. Demonstrated clinical competence and in-depth knowledge of specialty area; and demonstrated leadership, teaching, research and communication skills are required. Utah State prescriptive privileges is required. Licensure is obtained by completing a Master’s or Doctorate degree in Nursing/Physician Assistant or and a National Certification which requires the successful completion of a nationally accredited examination.UHPPM1-56 requires that newly hired non-physician providers apply for credentialing and privileging at the time of hire. Previous palliative care experience preferred but not required.

Responsibilities

Direct Patient Care: Perform palliative care consults in the hospital and outpatient settings; coordinate palliative care services for these patients and families. Perform routine scheduled, urgent, and emergent medical evaluations, order laboratory and diagnostic studies, prescribe medications and treatments, coordinate medical consultations, and participate in discharge planning for inpatients that have multiple active medical conditions and significant disease burden, in collaboration with the faculty attending physician. TheAPRN/PA works cooperatively with the medical students, physician residents, nursing students, nurse practitioner students and social work students. TheAPRN/PA follows patients as they are transferred throughout the hospital providing continuity of care to patients, families and medical teams.

Teaching Duties: Assist with development and presentation of palliative care educational programs to house staff, faculty, nursing and other hospital staff. Collaborates with clinical departments and clinical support services, such as nursing, in the development of educational programs. Serve as clinical preceptor forAPRN/PA students who are enrolled in degree programs at approved universities/colleges.

Documentation of Medical Services: Complete the written documentation of medical services required by regulatory agencies including the Joint Commission for Accreditation of Health Care Facilities, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services,DNV, and the third party insurers identified by the patients.
