Job Summary

This position is located within Health Services Research and Development (HSRD) at the VA Salt Lake City Healthcare System. The role of the incumbent is to coordinate specific research protocols/programs to which s/he is assigned.Knowledge and skill in qualitative data collection techniques. Ability to code qualitative data. Knowledge of human subjects research guidelines and principles sufficient to help ensure the quality of human research subjects’ protection and the integrity of the human subjects’ research program.

Responsibilities

Major Duties

The incumbent is directly responsible for executing multiple tasks required for the successful day-to-day conduct of the assigned studies. Duties include but are not limited to the following:

•Transcribe recorded qualitative interviews

•Conduct qualitative data coding and analysis using Atlas.ti software and Microsoft Excel

•Perform mail merges for recruitment of research participants using Microsoft Word and Microsoft Access

•Screen and select study volunteer participants based upon exclusive criteria specified

•Recruit subjects; obtain informed consent; conducts interviews on the phone and in person

Perform scientific literature searches and synthesis

•Be knowledgeable aboutIRBprocedures and to help with the creation ofIRBdocuments

•Perform scientific literature searches and synthesis

Transcription

Responsibilities include transcribing qualitative focus groups and interviews.

Researches and solves complex questions related to coding, transcription, and relays the complex nature of interactions within the transcriptions as well as sharing any research quality concerns to the principal investigator (PI).

Knowledge and experience with all aspects of the qualitative transcription process, including being able to distinguish different voices, carefully and accurately transcribing statements verbatium, noting emotional patterns that emerge.

Completes the daily operations associated with transcription workload, ensuring high quality verbatium qualitative work. Consults with appropriate supervisor when confusing or ambiguous information is discovered. Is able to self-regulate in terms of completing tasks on a deadline, providing high quality work on a regular basis. Strong work ethic and capacity to hear and accurately transcribe statements is essential.

Learns how best to employ transcription technology to help maintain both speed and quality of work.

Coding

Researches and assigns codes to document emerging qualitative themes. Is able to interpret text with high levels of analytical skill. Is able to use both subjective judgment and objective selection of text to create meaningful codes.

Thoroughly reviews and analyzes the qualitative text to ensure that all themes are properly and adequately captured and documented.

Learns to use the qualitative software program Atlas.ti to help document and capture the qualitative coding.

Must be experienced sufficiently with spreadsheet software (e.g. excel) to covert qualitative themes into data spreadsheets.

Minimum Qualifications

One year dictaphone experience; one year of medical transcriptionist experience or equivalency; ability to type 65WPM; and knowledge of medical terminology required. Demonstrated human relation and effective communication skills are also required. This position has no responsibility for providing care to patients.

Preferences

Preference given to applicants who have proficiency with Atlas.ti software and Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
