Job Summary

The Department of Pediatrics at the University of Utah School of Medicine is seeking experienced Medical Assistants to join our Ambulatory Clinical Care operation in the Eccles Center at Primary Children’s Hospital (PCH). The ambulatory group consists of 14 pediatric subspecialty divisions and service lines that practice primarily atPCHandPCHRiverton. The pediatric ambulatory clinics atPCHoperate in conjunction with otherPCH, University and community pediatric providers.

We are seeking experienced candidates who are passionate about the care of children and being part of a groundbreaking interdisciplinary team approach to patient care in a controlled service environment. Our positions are designed to develop and provide professional growth opportunities for Medical Assistants seeking experience in all aspects of clinical care. Successful candidates will support designated pediatric subspecialties, with opportunities to expand and work closely with multiple disciplines and may be required to work at one or bothPCHclinic locations in Salt Lake City and Riverton. Must be willing and able to commute and work at both clinic locations.

Clinical functions within acceptable standards of care:

1.Review clinic schedules, identify and prioritize patient needs through phone, electronic and walk-in communication and in accordance with established guidelines, standing orders, and protocols.

2.Recognize and appropriately respond to emergency situations.

3.Prepare and maintain examination and treatment areas.

4.Perform complete intake process as specified by physician clinic protocols and the needs of each division (chief complaint, history, vital signs, height, weight,OFC, care process model data, etc.).

5.Assist providers with examinations, procedures, treatments and interventions.

6.Provide patient education as directed (content reflects specific MA training, guidelines, care process models, protocols).

7.Report significant changes in patient condition or other pertinent patient information to the care provider.

8.Follow provider instructions; demonstrate accurate, timely and efficient follow through with pharmacy refills, scheduling clinic appointments and out of clinic procedures, tracking lab results, leaving phone messages and distribution of information and materials.

9.Actively participates in clinic customer service improvement initiatives.

10.Actively participates in quality improvement initiatives (i.e.CQI,TQM, Lean, 100% participation, etc.).

Care coordination and office duties:

1.Schedule, coordinate and monitor appointments, inpatient/outpatient admissions, tests and treatments/procedures.

2.Maintain medical records and other information. Accurately document patient history, physical and vital information into the medical record.

3.Maintain inventory of medications or supplies used to treat patients.

4.Conduct pre-authorizations in accordance with third party insurer requirements.

5.Effectively use computer applications as needed in the office setting.

6.Effective communications skills on the phone, in writing and via email.

Minimum Qualifications

Completion of a certified Medical Assistant program or current certification as anEMT- Intermediate in the state of Utah is required. Basic Life Support Health Care Provider card or obtain one within one month of hire; demonstrated phlebotomy skills and demonstrated human relation and effective communication skills also required. Demonstrated proficiency in the specific clinic’s specialty skills within six weeks of hire is required. Specialty skills may not be performed until after the new hire completes competency testing.

Hiring department may prefer Medical Assistant Certification or Registration.
