Job Summary

Pioneer Theatre Company in Salt Lake City seeks a Lead Tailor/Theatrical Stitcher, position available beginning August 2017.PTCis a professional theatre company working underLORTagreements withAEA,SDC, andUSAproducing a seven show mainstage season that runs from August through May. This is a full time benefited position, salary is commensurate with experience. Under the direction of the Costume Shop Manager, the Lead Tailor/Theatrical Stitcher is responsible for the manufacturing and alterations of period and contemporary menswear as well as other tailored garments and general costume construction for the Pioneer Theatre Company main stage and U of Utah Theatre Department shows.


Essential Functions

1.Creates individual patterns for each costume or alters existing costume patterns to fit the performer’s measurements.

2.Construction and alterations of tailored clothing.

3.Fits basted costume to the actor or actress and marks areas requiring alterations.

4.Performs hand stitching finish work on costumes. Pressing and spot-cleaning costumes as needed.

5.Performs emergency repair work needed on a costume to keep the performance running.

6.Fine hand sewing to repair antique costumes, change details such as adding trims, buttons, appliques, etc.

7.May assist in the shopping for supplies and inventory needed for a particular production.

8. Explains costume construction techniques to student workers as needed

9.Assists in cleaning of work space and restocking of supplies in order to keep work area orderly.

Minimum Qualifications

Successful completion of an apprenticeship in tailoring, or the equivalency; three years of previous tailoring experience in a tailoring shop; the ability to take a rendering and produce a pattern from it; and oral and written communications skills required. The journeyman status is obtained by successful completion of a four year apprenticeship training program incorporating all aspects of garmet design, layout, cutting, sewing, and tailoring.
