Job Summary

The Associate Vice President for Research for the Health Sciences seeks Program Manager (or Associate Director, depending on experience – Please apply to separate Associate Director position) to support Health Sciences research strategic initiative planning, implementation, and monitoring. A primary role of this position will be to support the Immunology, Inflammation, and Infectious Diseases (III) Research Initiative.

The individual in this position will play a pivotal role to nurture alliances between and among faculty at the U of U, funding agencies, and industry to enhance institutional research competitiveness. A key function of this position is to work with stakeholders to develop program proposals, budgets (including a schedule for obtaining external support), goals, and implementation plans for review by health sciences center leadership. She or he will be expected to operate with guidance from supervisors during the initial learning period in the position. In addition, this individual will contribute to emerging and ongoingSVPHSResearch Unit initiatives and administrative responsibilities.

This position will report to the Director of the Senior Vice President for Health Sciences Research Unit.



1.Identify funding opportunities based on program interests. Identify complementary research interests among faculty and assemble teams to address multidisciplinary, interdepartmental funding opportunities. Assist in preparing multi-investigator extramural funding proposals, including writing, resource and budget recommendations, and subcontract and timeline development.

2.Participate in and facilitate strategic planning activities of the Immunology, Inflammation, and Infectious Diseases (III) Initiative. Track and facilitateIIIInitiative milestones as established by the Advisory Boards. Schedule, create materials for, and facilitate allIIIInitiative meetings.

3.Assist with strategic planning and coordination between theIIIInitiative and theSVPHSResearch Unit. Participate in staff meetings and provide decision support to the Research Unit.

4.In partnership with the Health Sciences Development office, prepare for and pursue major philanthropic opportunities related to theIIIInitiative.

5.Facilitate cooperative and collaborative community and institutional relationships.

6.Assist in the development of and administration ofIIIInitiative pilot grant programs.

7.Work with administrative staff to oversee the planning and execution ofIIIInitiative events (often in partnership with departments); including seminars, symposia, working groups, and community events as needed.

8.OverseeIIIInitiative communications, including print, presentations, website, email list serve, direct contact, and social media.

9.As requested by theSVPHSResearch Unit, participate in broad institutional initiatives, proposal and award applications, staff mentoring, and other administrative assignments.

10.Other duties as assigned by theSVPHSResearch Unit,IIIInitiative Chairs, andIIIInitiative Scientific Advisory Board.

Minimum Qualifications

Requires a Bachelor’s degree in a related area of assignment or equivalency and 4 – 6 years of progressively more responsible management experience. Background knowledge of assigned department’s area of specialization in order to analyze, plan and draw conclusions for recommendations to superiors. Demonstrated leadership skills in planning and directing employees and processes in order to effectively monitor and develop subordinates and to ensure the smooth operation of department. Completion of provided supervisory training within one year of employment may be required.

Master’s degree in a related area may be preferred.
