Job Summary

Under minimal supervision, responsible for planning, organizing, directing and/or controlling all aspects pertaining to a sizable specific program or multiple program functions of assigned department’s internal and external customer service, human resource and financial management operations pertaining to areas including (but not limited to) academic, research, health sciences, and community outreach. Acts as a catalyst between the department and its customers and staff to ensure continuity and quality of service and care.

Responsibilities

•Manage the administrative side of a large scientific research grant from the Department of Defense to the University of Utah.

•Coordinate the activities of many different research scientists across several different departments at the University of Utah to enable the researchers to achieve key research milestones proposed in the grant.

•Manage the grant budget.

•Evaluate vendors for purchasing supplies.

•Schedule regular meetings with the principal investigators and other research personnel to facilitate coordination of research activities and data sharing.

•Coordinate data storage and sharing.

•Prepare quarterly reports of research progress to the Department of Defense.

•Coordinate communication between principal investigators, research personnel, University of Utah administrators, accounting/finance, the Department of Defense and external advisors.

•Plan an annual meeting with an external advisory board, the steering committee and the Department of Defense program officer.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in a related area or equivalency (2 years related work experience may be substituted for 1 year of education). Four to six years of progressively more responsible management experience. Background knowledge of hiring department’s area of specialization in order to analyze, plan and draw conclusions for recommendations to superiors. Demonstrated leadership skills in planning and directing employees and processes in order to effectively monitor and develop subordinates and to ensure the smooth operation of department. Completion of provided supervisory training within one year of employment may be required. Master’s degree in a related area may be preferred.

•Six years related experience in assigned areas or equivalency.

•Demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills required.

•Excellent organizational and time-management skills required.

•Ability to manage financial budgets required.

•Prior experience working in a profession business setting or in a scientific research lab is required. Some scientific research experience is preferred.

•Master’s/PhD/MD degree in a related area is preferred.
