The Lead Cataloger will perform original and copy cataloging in all formats and provide operational and technical leadership for the Library’s enterprise integrated library system. The Lead Cataloger is responsible for overseeingMARCcataloging activities and for establishing policies and procedures for all cataloging activities.
Responsible for the overall maintenance of resource management module the University’s integrated library system, including authority control and special projects, but focusing on cataloging, resource management, and acquisitions.
UsesILSanalytics andSQLto collect and analyze data and assist with the production of reports.
Provides leadership in cataloging and metadata services, improving the discovery of and access to resources.
Helps coordinate and organize the activities of staff currently involved in cataloging, and leads the development of cataloging policies, best practices, standards, and workflows to continuously improve productivity and outcomes.
Provides consulting services, training, and oversight in cataloging and the application of metadata standards and schema.
Maintains an engagement with national and international trends and developments in cataloging, metadata standards, bibliographic control, authority control, integrated library systems, and knowledge management.
Performs original and copy cataloging in all formats, including physical and digital resources and serials.
Oversees batch loading and global editing of bibliographic records and develops and automates metadata ingest and deletion procedures.
Facilitates collaboration within and external to the unit to ensure that the most efficient and appropriate metadata standards and best practices are used in making physical, electronic, and digital materials discoverable and accessible.
Ensures compliance with national and local standards such asMARC,RDA, AACR2r,LCSH,LCCS,OCLC, LC cataloging practices, and other appropriate cataloging and metadata standards. Plans and coordinates the local implementation of necessary changes.
Bachelor’s degree in a related area or equivalency (2 years related work experience may be substituted for 1 year of education). Three to four years of progressively more responsible management experience. Background knowledge of hiring department’s area of specialization in order to analyze, plan and draw conclusions for recommendations to superiors. Demonstrated leadership skills in planning and directing employees and processes in order to effectively monitor and develop subordinates and to ensure the smooth operation of department. Master’s degree in a related area may be preferred.

Experience performing administrative functions within an integrated library system database (preferably Alma).
Significant knowledge of and ability to apply the following tools in bibliographic and authority work:RDA, AACR2, Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH), Library of Congress classification (LCC), and MARC21.
Experience cataloging a variety of bibliographic, digital and physical formats, including serials.
Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
Experience working with library databases, discovery tools,OCLCConnexion, MarcEdit, Cataloger’s Desktop, Classification Web, andRDAToolkit.
Familiarity with existing and emerging metadata standards and schemes, such asRDF,XML, Dublin Core, linked data, andBIBFRAME.
Experience with a national cooperative cataloging program such asNACO,BIBCO,CONSERorSACO.
Experience in performing name, series, and subject authority work.
Demonstrated project management experience.
Experience with creating, updating, and deleting records using batch processes.
Strong knowledge of computer technology with knowledge ofSQLand some programming knowledge.
Bibliographic knowledge of one or more languages in addition to English.
Evidence of innovation and leadership skills.
Ability to train staff and prepare effective training materials and documentation.
Ability to make decisions independently and work with initiative within the framework of departmental and Library policies and goals.
Ability to work in cooperation with colleagues in a service-oriented, collaborative environment.
