Job Summary

Assists both undergraduate and graduate students outside of the classroom in the wood shop, welding shop, metal casting shop, plaster room, small metals room and laser cutter individually as well as in small groups. In addition, this shop technician would assist other faculty, both full and part time, in learning the skills needed to work with the tools, machinery and equipment in these labs. This would include short technical training workshops for adjunct faculty as needed.

Responsibilities

1.Provides technical support for the department’s teaching laboratory activities; including technical advice and guidance to students on equipment usage, maintenance and safety. Work hours will be all day Fridays, some evenings and weekends as needed, 30 hours per week. Specific hours apart from Fridays will be negotiated with the candidate.

2.Assists the professor teaching the Wood Working and Metal Fabrication classes. Especially with foundry work, bronze and aluminum casting, as multiple people are needed to assist students in safely casting their artwork in these metals.

3.Assists Shawn Porter, Facilities Manager, in the activities of a mechanical repair in the labs as needed. Monitors the work of student employees, provides technical support for teaching lab facilities, and ensures safety procedures are adhered to.

4.Monitors the functioning and maintenance of shop operating systems, equipment, and facilities.

5.Assists in ordering supplies for the Sculpture lntermedia Area.

6.Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

7.Secures hazardous areas at end of regular business hours.

Minimum Qualifications

Four years relevant work experience in the applicable trades areas with one of those years in a lead capacity; demonstrated knowledge of national, state and local building codes and standards; ability to read wiring diagrams, blueprints, and be able to make mechanical sketches and drawings; and demonstrated human relation and effective communication skills required. Requires lifting and transporting heavy objects. A valid Utah Driver’s license may be required.

Preferences

A bachelor’s degree with at least one year’s experience or a minimum of 3-5 years of professional experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required: Knowledge of operating and maintenance principles, procedures, and tolerances in traditional and non­ traditional methods of metal and wood fabrication techniques.Along with this specialized, traditional fabrication skill set, the ideal candidate will possess knowledge of digital processes and equipment to expand the use of the Laser Cutter in the department as well as future acquisitions such as aCNCrouter (computer numerical control) and a Water Jet Plasma Cutter.

Knowledge of safety procedures applicable to shop activities.

Ability to install and calibrate specified machinery and/or technical equipment. Ability to communicate technical information to non-technical personnel.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort: Considerable physical activity. Work environment involves some heavy physical work; heavy lifting, pushing, or pulling required of objects up to 50 pounds. Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require following basic safety precautions.

Work involves considerable exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises.
