Job Summary

This opening is for a microbiologist to participate in a large international collaboration (http://www.pmsicbg.org/) focused on discovering drugs from bacteria isolated from mollusks. The role of this position is to coordinate among microbiologists among three institutions, maintaining quality and consistency in microbiology activities and stewardship of microbial collections. Research efforts are directed at improving recovery of interesting microbes and assisting chemists in growing cultures for efficient production of compounds of interest.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain and manage a bacterial strain archive and associated database, including culturing, storing, documenting and reviving strains.
  • Conduct bacteriological research.
  • Receive and ship samples among collaborators including database documentation and complying with foreign and US export, import and shipping requirements.
  • Order and receive supplies and equipment.
  • Maintain a saltwater (non-vertebrate) aquarium facility.
  • Coordinate training on equipment and arrange maintenance.
  • Consult scientific literature and share recommendations.
  • Make calculations, do data analysis and prepare written and oral reports.

Nearly Continuously: Office environment.

Often: Infectious disease, oils ( there is air or skin exposure to oils or other cutting fluids ), hazards ( includes a variety of physical conditions, such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, moving vehicles, electrical current, working on scaffolding and high places, or exposure to chemicals ).

Seldom: Exposure to animals.

Physical Requirements and Level of Frequency that may be required

Nearly Continuously: Hearing, listening, talking.

Often: Repetitive hand motion (such as typing), walking, standing, sitting.

Seldom: Bending, reaching overhead.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in biology, chemistry, or other scientific disciplines in a related field or equivalency required; knowledge of complex laboratory techniques, equipment, terminology, materials and substances. Skilled in the use of laboratory equipment, ability to create and analyze statistical calculations and prepare reports required; and demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills also required.OSHAtraining and certification in animal care and use or the willingness to complete the certification may be required by some departments.

Preferences

B.S./M.S. Biology, Biochemistry, Chemistry etc. knowledge of biological and microbiological techniques: Including sterile technique, preparation of solutions and bacteriological media, computer skills.

Demonstrated human relations and communication skills. Prefer candidates able to travel occasionally to the Philippines for periods of one to three weeks
