This position is responsible for facilitating the resolution of funding issues for insured and self-pay hospital patients. May work with Medical Director, physicians, and billing offices to determine cost estimates for procedures and coordinates patient access to scheduled procedures. Responsible to collect payment for services throughout the revenue cycle.

This position is not responsible for providing care to patients.


  • Conduct Interviews and screen un-funded patients to determine the best funding source such as: Medicaid, crime victims and Affordable Act insurance plans. The incumbent will work with government agencies to process the required applications for eligibility. Follows the applications closely until the account converts to funded or denied.

  • If no funding source is available the incumbent will assist patients to complete financial hardship applications. Has the authority to grant full or partial charity, prompt pay discounts or payment arrangements

  • Must be able to work with patients and family members during catastrophic or challenging life events which may involve, but are not limited to disability, amputation, or death

  • Creates price estimates based on the insurance plan or unfunded status for services to be rendered or prospective patients shopping for prices. Collects patient responsibility based upon the estimate through-out the Revenue Cycle.

  • May coordinate and obtain “Certificate of Medical Necessity” if the upcoming procedure is not life threating in the event the patient is unable to make a substantial payment toward the services to be rendered. The incumbent has the authority to determine the amount of the deposit based upon financial status.

  • Determines third-party liability in cases of injury or assault and initiates paperwork required for hospital liens. Initiates claim process with third-party payer (i.e.: auto insurance company, worker’s compensation) on behalf of patient when appropriate.

  • Coordinates and manages all financial aspects related to insurance benefit information, authorization, billing and collections.

  • Responsible to coordinate communication to the patient/ provider when authorization or benefits are not secured

  • May obtain prior authorizations, ability to determine accurate CPT codes, and submits required documentation.

  • Three years of experience with medical accounts receivable, insurance claims, or equivalency

  • Knowledge of CPT , ICD9/10 and DRG codes

  • High School Diploma

Qualifications (Preferred):


  • Previous experience with medical accounts receivable, insurance claims, or equivalency.

  • Bilingual language skills may be preferred

  • Medicaid enrollment process

  • Coding certification; CCS, CPC-H, CPC-P

  • CMS Certified Financial Counselor
