Job Summary

This position assists dentists with routine as well as restorative and surgical procedures. The incumbent maintains and operates equipment and instruments under the direction of the department, and provides initial orientation for dental students. This position may be required to access and administer medications within their scope of practice and according to State Law.

1. Assisting student and faculty dentists with procedures by preparing, identifying, and/or providing appropriate instruments.

2. Maintaining equipment and supplies.

3. Acting to ensure proper infection control, clinic policies, and processes are followed.

4. Assisting in the tracking of clinic procedures through maintaining and/or entering data.

5. Assisting in the orientation, education, and training of dental students on clinic procedures and protocols.

6. Adhering to standards set byOSHA,HIPAA,FERPA,CODAand other standards set by the department.

7. Participating and contributing in committees and discussions regarding clinic operations, materials, protocols, and/or quality assurance.

Clinic Operations Duties:

• Performing routine cleaning, stocking, and equipment maintenance including but not limited to changing traps, maintaining water unit levels, cleaning chair bases, stocking supplies, and printing and stocking clinic forms.

• Assisting student dentists with the preparation of procedures, chairside assisting, and radiology positioning and technique.

• Assisting specialists with clinic procedures and maintaining specialty equipment.

• Providing Dentrix and Romexis technical support to students, staff, and faculty.

Oral Diagnosis Duties:

• Assisting as a practical instructor for radiology positioning, technique, and troubleshooting.

• Tracking radiology and screening procedures through maintaining and entering data in Excel.

• Assisting in the education of patients on clinic policies and processes.

• Assisting in the screening and radiology procedures of the clinic.

• Assisting in the set up and break down of the operatory.

• Obtaining and uploadingCBCTimages for interpretation.

Dispensary and Sterilization Duties:

• Ordering, organizing, and restocking supplies for clinic use and outreach projects.

• Barcoding and inventorying instruments, cassettes, and equipment.

• Preparing materials for student and faculty dentists.

• Dispensing medications, materials, instruments, and cassettes to student and faculty dentists.

• Assigning operatories to student dentists.

• Inspecting equipment and replacing as necessary.

• Disinfecting, lubricating, washing, wrapping, and sterilizing instruments, cassettes, and equipment for clinic use and outreach projects.

• Performing and logging biological and calibration tests.

• Adhering to manufacturer, University Hospital, andCDCguidelines for reprocessing instruments and equipment.

• Maintaining sterilization records and inventory reports.

Oral Surgery Duties:

• Assisting and instructing students and faculty dentists in oral surgery procedures.

• Dispensing, tracking, and inventorying oral surgery materials and equipment.

• Maintaining records of implant procedures.

• Performing routine operatory maintenance procedures.

• Assisting the student and faculty dentist with the preparation and administration of sedation anesthesia.

• Assisting in the triage of emergency care.

Pediatric Duties:

• Chairside assisting student and faculty dentists in pediatric procedures.

• Dispensing, tracking, and inventorying pediatric materials and equipment.

• Performing routine operatory maintenance procedures.

Faculty Practice Duties:

• Preparing, setting up, and breaking down treatment rooms for procedures.

• Obtaining radiographs.

• Chairside assisting faculty dentists with various procedures.

• Performing laboratory procedures by pouring, trimming and mounting models and making custom trays.

• Instructing patients on appropriate dental hygiene practices.

• Registering and scheduling patients in Epic.

• Checking patients out and collecting payment and/or insurance information.

Problem Solving:

This position performs duties as outlined by the State of Utah Dental Practice Act. The incumbent must keep current and initiate implementation of infection control protocol that prevents cross contamination and protects staff. The incumbent is encouraged to participate in training and education as new advances in dentistry arise.

Comments:

The staff member must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served on his or her assigned unit. The individual must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of life span growth and development and the ability to assess data regarding the patient’s status and provide care as described in the department’s policies and procedures manual.

Work Environment and Level of Frequency that may be required:

Nearly Continuously: Office/Clinic environment.

Seldom: Vibration, Exposure to oscillating movements of extremities or whole body. Strong: Infectious disease, oils, there is air or skin exposure to oils or other cutting fluids

Physical Requirements and Level of Frequency that may be required:

Nearly Continuously: Hearing, listening, talking.

Often: Repetitive hand motion (such as typing), walking, standing, sitting.

Often: Bending, reaching overhead.

Minimum Qualifications

Completion of Dental Assistant Course and one year chair-side experience or equivalency. Successful completion of Radiology Safety and Health exam or complete within six months of hire. Basic Life Support Health Care Provider card through American Heart Association or obtain within one month of hire. Excellent human relations and effective communication skills also required.

Additional license requirements as determined by the hiring department.
