The J. Willard Marriott Library seeks an energetic and experienced professional for the position of Original / Special Collections Cataloger. This position offers an excellent opportunity to work with committed and knowledgeable colleagues who are dedicated to making scholarly resources available to a vibrant community of students, faculty, and researchers. Reporting to the Assistant Director for Special Collections and working closely with curators from the Division of Special Collections, particularly the Rare Books and Print & Journal departments, the successful candidate will:

- Take primary responsibility for providing access to new acquisitions and legacy collections in monographs, maps, serials, and ephemera from Special Collections departments;

- Provide original catalog records for Rare material, and catalog or train staff and faculty in copy cataloging in all formats, physical and digital;

- Help to coordinate and organize workflows to ensure prompt and efficient access to recently purchased or donated materials;

- Participate with colleagues in relevant Special Collections and Collection Management departments in updating policies and procedures to reflect current best practices in Special Collections cataloging;

- Ensure compliance with national and local standards such asMARC,RDA, AACR2, DCRM ,LCSH,LCCS,OCLC, LC cataloging practices, and other appropriate cataloging and metadata standards;

- Maintain an awareness of and engagement with national and international trends and developments in cataloging and metadata standards, bibliographic and authority control, and knowledge management, and take an active role in the local implementation of these practices;

- Participate in special projects as needed;

- Facilitate collaboration within and external to the unit to ensure the most efficient and appropriate standards and best practices are used in making physical, electronic, and digital materials discoverable.

While this position focuses primarily on cataloging, all faculty librarians serve the needs of University faculty, staff, and students along with members of the local community. Work across organizational lines is encouraged to support and strengthen all services in the Marriott Library. The Original / Special Collections Cataloger will assist with implementing the Marriott Library’s Strategic Directions and is expected to remain professionally active through participation in appropriate professional societies and a robust research and publication program.

Required qualifications:

-ALA-accreditedMLS/MLIS, or the equivalent combination of a relevant advanced degree and experience working in an academic library;

-Professional experience with cataloging or metadata, with a significant track record in cataloging rare, antiquarian, or unique printed and manuscript material;

- Significant knowledge of and ability to apply the following cataloging tools:RDA, AACR2, Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH) and Library of Congress classification (LCC), and MARC21 formats for bibliographic and authority data;

- Experience cataloging a variety of bibliographical formats;

- Evidence of leadership, organizational, and project management skills;

- Ability to make decisions independently and work with initiative within the framework of departmental and Library policies and goals;

- Excellent oral and written communication skills;

- Ability to work effectively both independently and in cooperation with colleagues in a service-oriented, collaborative environment;

- Commitment to fostering a diverse educational environment and workplace and ability to work with a diverse student and faculty population;

- Capacity to thrive in the fast-paced, future-oriented environment of a research institution and to respond effectively to changing needs and priorities, showing agility and flexibility;

- Demonstrated proficiency and capability with information technology systems in the context of an academic Library;

Desired qualifications:

- Familiarity and working experience with rare, antiquarian, and distinctive printed material, ranging from books and documents from the handpress period to twenty-first century zines and artists’ books;

- At least four years of professional experience with primary focus on original cataloging or metadata;

- Knowledge of standards relevant to original and rare book cataloging, particularly Descriptive Cataloging of Rare Materials (Books) – DCRM ;

- Fluency in bibliographical concepts necessary to distinguish editions, impressions, issues, and states of a given printed title;

- Knowledge of book transcription, collation, and discipline standards in copy-specific physical description;

- Willingness to pursue additional training and professional development activities, such as workshops in rare book cataloging or book history;

- Advanced knowledge of the Alma system;

- Experience in performing name, series, and subject authority work;

- Demonstrated project management experience;

- Strong knowledge of computer technology;

- Reading, writing, or speaking skills in additional languages, with priority given to Latin, French, Italian, or German;

- Evidence of active participation and involvement in professional and scholarly associations and a record of scholarly engagement, typically demonstrated through publications and presentations, and commitment to professional issues and involvement. Appointment at the Associate Librarian level will require sufficient experience and professional accomplishment to qualify for tenure at time of appointment.

Compensation: $53,000-$60,000 dependent on qualifications, plus excellent benefits including a 14.2% retirement contribution toTIAA-CREF/Fidelity, medical and dental coverage, and generous paid sick and vacation time.
