The University Neuropsychiatric Institute is seeking a part-time (PRN) Admissions and Billing Specialist. This position is responsible for administrative functions within a busy psychiatric hospital. Work side-by-side with social workers and other clinical staff by registering patients, performing insurance verifications, distributing information and providing exceptional customer service to patients.

This position supports psychiatric clinical and medical staff by triaging telephone calls, matching physicians to patients, tracking patient census and registering patients for hospital admission.
Receives and triages incoming telephone calls from individuals and/or their family members seeking assistance for a variety of mental health issues. Gathers pertinent information, helps to ensure the caller’s safety and makes community referrals as appropriate.
Interviews patients to obtain demographic, insurance and related information.
Registers patients by entering appropriate information.
Communicates patient information with medical/clinical staff.
Coordinates assignment of patients to beds and appropriate units. Maintains real-time bed board by communicating with individual units and conducting census walkthroughs.
Assigns patients to physicians based on primary diagnosis, availability and insurance.
Discusses financial arrangements with incoming patients and/or family members; explains billing/collection procedures and collects co-pays; provides financial counseling as needed.
Prepares patient charts and retrieves medical records.
Participates in and supports continuous quality improvement activities.
Knowledge / Skills / Abilities
Ability to perform the essential functions of the job as outlined above.
Demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills.
Ability to provide care appropriate to the population served.
- Four years of mental health, medical office, customer service, or related experience, or equivalency.
- Bachelor’s degree in a related area, mental health hospital or crisis experience.
